License mandatory for TV on mobile phones
  Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has declared that license is mandatory for TV transmission on mobile phones. Pemra’s bar on TV transmission on cell phones was challenged by Telenor Company. Telenor was the first cellular company that introduced TV transmission on cell phones, which was declared illegal by Pemra. Company sought IT Ministry’s guidelines. After complete consultation with legal experts, Ministry has given verdict that license is mandatory for TV transmission on cell phones.

SMAC decries attack on journalists
  The South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) has condemned attacks on Aaj television channel offices and other journalists during violence in Karachi. "We stand by Aaj TV and other journalists' organisations who are defying all state and non-state actors' pressure," said SMAC Chairperson N Ram and Secretary General Najam Sethi in a press statement Wednesday. The Commission office-bearers termed the attack "yet another attempt on the freedom of the press, which has already been under fire for the last few months". The SAMC demanded the government protect journalists, arrest the culprits behind the attack and punish them.

  2006 most brutal year for media
  The International Press Institute (IPI) in its latest report on the state of media, has termed 2006 as the “most savage and brutal year” for journalists in the modern history of the media, which saw 100 journalists killed across the globe. The IPI, an institute dedicated to safeguarding press freedom across the world, has also bracketed Pakistan with five countries where violence against journalists has become a hallmark of governments. Other four being Afghanistan, Philippines, Mexico, and Sri Lanka. The report says that in Pakistan where four journalists were killed this year, IPI has also been concerned about the disappearance of journalists. In numerous cases this year, journalists were abducted by the authorities, in some cases for months, without informing anyone of their whereabouts or the reason for their abduction.

Media University to be established
  The government is setting up a media university to meet the growing demands of media professionals said Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azeem. The minister was talking to a four member delegation of Communication University of China led by Ren Jin Zhou vice President of University that called on Minister. The delegation is currently visiting Pakistan to explore avenues of collaboration for establishment of Media University in Islamabad.

  Media role imperative for progress
  Media should play its role in the ongoing jpurney of progress and prosperity of country, said Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Amanullah Khan Jadoon. He said media has never acquired such freedom of expression in the past as it is enjoying today, the minister said this in a ceremony held here Wednesday to award certificates to media men.

  Provincial Minister visited Aaj TV office to condole firing incident
  Provincial Minister Irfan ullah Khan Murwat visited the Aaj Television office in Karachi; he conveyed condolences of Prime Minister to administration of the channel for the firing incident. He told Aaj administration that Prime Minister had given him special advice to visit the office to convey his condolence for the tragic incident of firing. Minister also condemned the sad incident.

  Foundation for Chakwal journalists soon
  A journalists welfare foundation will be established in Chakwal district soon to facilitate the media persons. This was stated by former Baitul Mal (PBM) chairman and social worker Raja Mujahid Afsar while speaking at a “Meet the press” program held at Chakwal press club.

  Govt may slash import duty on paper industry items
  Govern-ment is likely to slash the import duty on different items being used in paper industry during the next budget 2007-08, The Post has learnt. According to the document available with The Post, the government has received proposals from the stakeholders of paper industry who have called for the cutting of import duty ranging from 5 to 50 percent on different items. Paper industry-related business community has asked the government to reduce the import duty from 20 percent to 10 percent on the import of wet strength agent that is used in paper industry to give strength to tissue paper. Paper industry has also called for the cut in duty being imposed on the import of dispersing agent from 20 to 10 percent during the next budget. This item is used by paper and board manufacturers to control dispersing of paper coating formulation to ensure high-quality printing.

“Odd behavior towards web journalism”
  Express columnist Asad ullah Ghalib in his article “Web journalism se sotila Salook” (Odd behavior towards web journalism) comments, “In spite of free access to web editions, National newspapers can sell their digital edition to world. There is a policy for advertisements for newspapers. Same policy should also be designed for government advertisement to newspaper websites.”

World Telecom Day today
  The World Telecommunication Day would be observed here on Thursday like other parts of the world. The theme of this year is ‘importance of communications for the whole world’s people.’ In this connection various events related to telecommunications would be organized by the Ministry of Information Technology to mark the day. The date, May 17, coincides with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which is celebrating its 138th anniversary. The day also highlights the role carried out by telecommunications in the societies development and of the citizens access to the information and knowledge. Telecommunications has become an even more important issue since the initiative to establish a hemisphere-wide free trade zone by the first decade of the 21st century. On the eve of World Telecommunication Day, all leading Newspapers have published special supplements to mark World Telecommunication and Information Society (WTIS) Day.

  Information Society Day today
  The World Information Society Day is being celebrated on Thursday to help make the internet a global facility for all people and to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of internet and other information and communication technology (ICT) can bring to societies and economies. The event celebrated each year on May 17 promotes awareness of the power of information and communication to build societies in which everybody can create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge to achieve his/her full potential. The establishment of a World Information Society Day, which was suggested in the “Tunis Agenda for the Information Society” adopted by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis in 2005, was decided by the United Nations General Assembly in March last year. The theme of this year’s observance is “Connecting the young”.

  PTA invites comment on VOIP paper
  Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has published a consultancy paper on Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), which invites comments by all. The 58-page, written by a consultant, Naseem A. Vohra, is a good summary of VOIP technology and VOIP situation in Pakistan. The paper addresses legal issues, policy issues and issues related to licensing and regulation of the service. PTA has invited comments from all the telecom stakeholders on the consultancy paper.
