Media in Court SHC rejects Pemra’s dismissal plea

Pemra files comments; says PBA preparing voluntary code of conduct
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Ordinance 2007 has not yet been enforced as the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) is coming up with a voluntary code of conduct, Pemra’s counsel told the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday. The court was hearing a petition filed by members of the Sindh Bar Council, Salahuddin Gandapur and Mohammad Aqil, who had challenged amendments to the Pemra Ordinance 2002, contending the amendments were in violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens of Pakistan. Pemra filed comments before the court, submitting that the petition was not maintainable as petitioners were neither an aggrieved party nor aggrieved persons under Article 199 of the Constitution. “The Pemra (Amendment) Ordinance 2007 was promulgated under Article 89 of the Constitution mainly to correct a few definitions and enable better regulation,” Pemra’s counsel Kashif Hanif said. He said petitioners had openly criticised the reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, which was a sub judice matter, tantamount to the contempt of court. “Petitioners are trying to make an issue of it without even referring to any single provision of the amended ordinance,” he said. The Pemra’s counsel said a notice should be issued to the attorney-general in this regard and sought adjournment to file comments on other identical petitions that challenged the Pemra (Amendment) Ordinance 2007. Petitioners’ counsel Mustafa Lakhani told the court the notice was issued to the attorney-general and the standing counsel also appeared on behalf of the federal government in the previous two hearings.

Movies Influx of movies for cinema industry after many years |
| |
There was a time when the cinemas were closing down or turning into theatres for stage plays. Now the reverse trend has begun and the latest to come back in the fold of cinema industry is Alfalah theatre, which would screen Bollywood flick ‘Awarapan’ from 20th of this month. In year 2000 Alfalah cinema was given to the highest bidder for a monthly rent of Rs 250,000 after deposit of Rs one million as security. It was to be run for stage plays as well as movies. Later as a violation of the Cinematography Act the cinema was converted into a theatre at a cost of Rs 4.4 million. Though the venue was used to stage plays the cinema screen was not removed. Now after seven years Alfalah will again try to attract the movie buffs.

Telecom network restored |
| |
The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd has restored almost the entire telecom network damaged in recent floods in Balochistan and elsewhere. Links with 33 of the 35 telephone exchanges affected due to rains and floods have been restored. Links with only two exchanges are yet to be restored, mainly due to inaccessibility of the areas concerned. Both the links will be restored as soon as the sites become accessible, a press release issued by the PTCL says. The handout claims that the PTCL staff undertook restoration work round the clock in order to ensure speedy completion of their task. Telecommunications system was badly affected due to recent torrential rains and floods and the PTCL had to suffer a loss of Rs25 million in the shape of revenue opportunity and restoration costs. The restoration work was mainly hindered by closure of different roads and huge damage to various exchanges. |
