The Alami Pushto Congress, a worldwide organization for the promotion of Pashtu language and literature, arranged a protest camp in front of the Peshawar Press Club Thursday for less coverage to Pashtu programmes on state-run electronic media. The protest camp was led by acting chairman of Pashtu Congress, Shahabuddin Khattak and was attended by a large number of Pashtu poets, writers, lawyers, artists and representatives various political parties visited the camp. Speaking on the occasion, Shahab said the Pashtoon and Pasthu language are being meted out step-motherly attitude in Pakistan since long, saying PTV administration had added insult to the injury by airing a few Pashtu programmes on PTV regional and then shifting it to PTV National, which was hardly watched in the rural areas.

Soomro reserves ruling on Pemra amend ordinance
Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro on Thursday reserved his ruling on opposition’s demand that Pemra amendment ordinance should be laid in parliament along with a disapproval resolution. Opposition said that it was a constitutional violation not to do immediately after the ordinance’s promulgation which shows government’s malafide intention to intact like a sword of Democles over media. The chair reserved ruling after Mian Raza Rabbani argued that the government was circumventing the right of senate by not laying the ordinance in the house.

FM Listening | FM channels lack patriotic zeal on Independence Day by Sehrish Wasif
Before the actual day of freedom that was 14th of August, one could feel that the air waves were loaded with loads and loads of patriotism, excitement and delight. On every channel one could listen to some heart capturing and melodious patriotic songs. All this gave the listeners the false perception that on this Independence Day the FM channels would really rock the party. But unfortunately the patriotic spirit due to some unknown reasons dwindled to a great extent on various FM channels on the eve of Independence Day. It was really shocking and amazing to hear some FM channels giving more priority to their regular shows and ignoring the merriment of the occasion. Like on City FM 89 the regular evening shows went on air flooded with western music as usual. Then on Radio One FM 91 the only difference was that the RJ called Sophie instead of her usual chattering was informing listeners that she was offering a special request show in order to celebrate the day. But unfortunately her show too was loaded with western music. Only the SMS she was receiving from the listeners contained some wishes for the Independence Day.

  Cinema
The News Editorial “Needed: cinemas”
The padlocked NAFDEC cinema located in the heart of Islamabad has a desolate, forlorn look far from its glorious past. It once used to cater to the movie buffs of the capital city, with the screening of movies like Eraser and Jinnah. The NAFDEC's twin auditoriums, G 6's Melody Cinema and a lesser-known cinema in Sitara Market (G 7) mostly screened Punjabi movies keeping the movie lovers of Islamabad satiated. With the decline of cinema in the country, and the unsafe environs of these cinemas many people just stopped going. And business became so bad that soon cinemas starting closing down. Today, it is really sad that Islamabad has no cinema house to provide healthy entertainment to its residents. The recent release of movies like Awarapan and Khuda Kay Liye, has once again highlighted the dearth of cinema houses. The news that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is contemplating setting up of a cinema house in the capital is certainly a welcome development. It is heartening to learn that the matter was discussed in a recent meeting with the CDA Chairman Kamran Lashari in chair. While the development/construction of a new cinema house will take time, the CDA for now should explore the possibility of reopening NEFDEC and Melody cinemas, which would be easier and quicker.
