The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) on Saturday rejected the formation of the proposed Press and Publication Regulatory Authority (PPRA), dubbing it “yet another disguised attempt to control the press” in Pakistan in the name of regulation.

Reporters beaten up by ‘guards’ |
| |
Reporters covering the stampede at Alhamra Cultural Complex (ACC) alleged that the ACC officials had beaten them and damaged their cameras. Abid Hussain and Muhammad Irfan, photographers for two Urdu newspapers who were first to reach the scene said that they were busy photographing the scene when a group of officials wearing red caps snatched their cameras and destroyed them.

The Standing Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) at an emergency session on Saturday chaired by the CPNE President, Syed Faseih Iqbal, deliberated upon the proposed bill on the formation of Press & Publications Regulatory Authority (PAPRA) by the federal government and rejected it “outright”, describing it as another subtle alternative to control the press under the euphemism of regulation.

Billboards on 23 intersections |
| |
Twenty-three major intersections in the city will be auctioned for advertisement by the CDGK Revenue Department. The revenue department has divided the city into five zones where billboards will be installed according to a uniform policy, a city government official said. Around 1,800 hoardings would be installed on land which falls under the jurisdiction of the CDGK, and only companies registered with the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) will be allowed to fix the billboards.

| |
A seminar on `Research on Urdu language in universities — orientation and reforms’, organised by Urdu Department of Bahauddin Zakariya University, was held here. Dr professor Rasheed Amjad presided over the seminar while professors of Urdu departments of all universities, including Dr Najeeb Jamal, Dr Sabir Kalori, Dr Muhammad Saleem Malik, Dr Syed Javed Iqbal, Dr Orangzaib Alamgir, Dr Alamdar Hussain Bokhari, Dr Khalid Mehmood Sanjrani, Dr Anwar Ahmed, Dr Aqeela Shaheen, Dr Qazi Abid, Dr Aqeela Javed, Dr Sajid Khan, Dr Mumtaz Kulyani and Dr Robeena Tareen, were also present on the occasion.

In search of reliable information

The mainstay of the Internet, the reason why we love to go through the hassle of switching on the computer and logging onto the Net (though some now manage the same with PDAs), is that we get information. Be it about anything, our thirst for knowing the unknown has us strolling through the Internet. Be it in text form or in an image, the old or the new, we have got to know what is happening out there. And for that very reason we have a number of web sites that help us get the right information. Or do they?
