Journalists continued their token hunger strike outside Islamabad camp office of Rawalpindi Islamabad Press club to protest the government’s failure to secure the release of senior journalist from kidnappers.

| |
The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Photo Journalist Association will stage a huger strike camp at the Press Club Melody Office at about 2:00pm on Monday (tomorrow) in protest against the kidnapping of journalist Sohail Qalandar and his friend Niaz Muhammad.

Journalists across the country will mark Monday as protest day on the call of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) that has asked all the union of journalists to take out protest rallies against the kidnapping of resident editor of Express Sohail Qalandar.

Karachi: Protest Rally |
| |
The Karachi Union of Journalists has planned a protest rally on Monday to register its concern and protest over mysterious disappearance of the Peshawar-based resident editor of daily Express, Sohail Qalandar, and the government’s failure to secure his release. According to a KUJ press release, the rally will be joined by the APNEC at 3pm at the Karachi Press Club on February 19. From there it would march to the Governor’s House to present a memorandum. The rally would be in response to the PFUJs’ call for a nationwide protest against the incident and the phenomenon of missing persons in the country.

PM optimistic for early recovery pf journalist |
| |
Prime Minister Shukat Aziz has assured that government machinery is active for recovery of missing journalist. He was talking to media in Peshawar. He termed the kidnap a tragic incident. He said thyat the act is condemnable.

Body formed to prepare policy for electronic media |
| |
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday constituted a committee under Minister for Information Muhammad Ali Khan Durrani to prepare policy guidelines for expansion of electronic media in public and private sector. He advised that the policy should be in line with best regional and international practices. It should help create conducive atmosphere for growth and development of media. The policy guidelines should also recommend steps to protect investments in public and private sector, Shaukat added. Chairing a meeting to review the working of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), the prime minister said the unprecedented growth has taken place in media as a result of government liberal policies. He said the passage of Pemra bill will further facilitate and streamline growth in this sector. He said the government believes in free flow of information in order to keep the masses abreast with the international events, trends and developments, and the bill, after its adoption, will fulfil longstanding demand to launch new TV channels in the country. Chairman PEMRA Iftikhar Rasheed earlier made a presentation about the implementation status of decisions earlier made by the Prime Minister.

Foreign media trip to South Waziristan |

Correspondents of international media visited Pak Afghan border and different parts of Waziristan agency. Political administration gave briefings about developments in the area. Military officials arranged meetings with local tribal leaders for interaction to get knowledge about recent developments, law and order situation and military operation against terrorists.

Language institutes in NWFP varsities urged |

Speakers at a conference held here on Saturday underlined the need for setting up institutes in NWFP universities for the promotion of some 30 languages and dialects spoken in the province and the cultures associated with them. The two-day “Frontier Languages National Conference” was organised by the Gandgahar Hindko Board (GHB) at the Archives Hall on Sher Shah Road here. Academics specialising in Hindko, Pashto, Khwar, Gojjri, Yadgha, Kalasha, Pehlola, Damili, Gwarbati, Mashriqi Katwari, Kalami, Torwali, Ashojo, Indus Kohistani, Batiri, Wakhi, Domaki, Urmori, Vanisi, Peshai, Sraeki, Madakalashti, Kashmiri, Kalkoti, Balti, Shena, Burshuski, Gaward, Chaliso and Pahari attended the conference.

PCB appoints Mansoor Sohail as Director Media |
| |
Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed a senior mediaman, Mansoor Sohail, as its Director Media and Public Affairs. “Mansoor Sohail has accepted this appointment and he will soon join us”, the PCB Chairman, Dr. Nasim Ashraf, told reporters Saturday after presiding over a meeting of PCB Adhoc Committee. Nasim said the new PCB Director Media has also worked as Information Officer in Pakistan mission in New York and has to his credit some other assignments as well. He also disclosed that TV host P.J. Mir will act as media manager with the Pakistan team during the World Cup starting in the West Indies next month.“He has been directed to treat all Pakistani journalists and media in the West Indies on even keel. He will ensure that Pakistan media is the first to get any information”, Nasim said.
