EDITORIALS:
The press is under attack
The “missing” journalist from the tribal areas, Hayatullah Khan Dawar, has been murdered. His body was found on Friday, seven months after his kidnapping from the mountains about six kilometres south of the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan Agency. Mr Dawar is the third journalist to be assassinated in the tribal areas since the operation began there, the earlier two having been killed in Wana in February 2005.

A most brazen murder
The cold-blooded murder of journalist Hayatullah Khan, who had been missing for over six months, is a most brazen act and needs to be thoroughly investigated independently by the government, or else its claims of press freedom will ring very hollow. Also, going by the claims of his brother and other family members, Hayatullah's death seems to indicate that there are some entities in this country that seem to believe that they can flout the law of the land with impunity, and operate as a state within a state.

Hayatullah's death
Tragic, horrendous, horrible are words that sound falling short of meaning when we try to describe the sad end of journalist Hayatullah Khan, who was kidnapped by five masked men some six months ago on December 5, 2005 from North Waziristan Agency. He worked for the local dailies Ausaf and The Nation and the European Pressphoto Agency.

In memory of Hayatullah
It was 1998 when I met Hayatullah for the first time in Mir Ali. The first hug of our Pushtun tradition turned into an eternal friendship. My first contact with hospitable, pleasant, lively and daredevil Hayatullah did not take even a minute to feel at home in his company.

Need for collective initiative to get truth
By Nusrat Javed
The military elite of Pakistan can always take control of this country without much ado, primarily for the fact that our politicians have miserably failed to play the power games by some rules. They remain spitefully divided and treat their rivals in either/or manner. But there come moments when the same politicians appear shamelessly united to protect their ‘privileged statuses. Saturday was the height of it. For more than six months, many journalists of Islamabad had been anxiously trying to motivate the government and its security agencies to do something solid for locating Hayatullah Khan.

A writer called Zafar Samdani
THE sad demise of Zafar Samdani reminds me of the good old days of Pak Tea House. A lot of young talent had freshly arrived from the Government College . They all appeared to be budding writers engaged in trying to write modern verse. The enigmatic poetry of Miraji served as a source of inspiration for them. A young boy Zafar Samdani formed part of that lot.
