Media Miscellaneous Exclusive interview | Press freedom be respected: EU |
| |
Envoy says media should also act responsibly, fair polls imperative
On EU statement on media curbs: It is not a matter of interference in Pakistan's internal matters. Everybody knows about the core values of the European Union. We believe in fundamental freedom; human rights; democracy and press freedom. We feel that we do have an obligation to our own constituents to point out whenever we see breach of such freedoms. Freedom of the press is very important and we cannot remain silent when we see this freedom being tampered with, and we would definitely raise our concerns. If Pakistan is to profile itself as an important country among the democratic societies then it has to ensure such freedoms. As regards the statement of the Foreign Office spokesperson declaring EU statement interference in Pakistan's internal matters, in fact it does not worry me too much. We have got many messages and emails from different segments of society in support of our common stand on the press freedom issue, but at the same time I would say, the press too needs to act in a responsible manner. Let me reiterate here that we could continue to raise our concerns whenever fundamental freedoms are denied, especially in this particular year when people shall be electing a new government.

Rejoinder appreciated |
| |
It is appreciated that the honorable correspondent in his rejoinder published in the daily The News of Sunday June 17 has admitted by quoting examples that his news item under the caption "Feast or famine" was not intended to establish a nexus of stray facts narrated by him with the affidavits. However his implied neutrality is defied by the conclusions likely to be drawn by most readers, says a statement by the government. While there is complete freedom of expression and it is not expected from journalists to tow the government line, they also carry onerous responsibility to report facts in proper context, with as much objectivity as possible, so that their readers can form an educated opinion based on information given in correct perspective. Ansar Abbasi adds: It is nice to see a sea change in the tone and tenor of the government's response when compared with the previous one published on Saturday in The News pages. Good for this correspondent that the "errant" journalist is now seen as an "honourable" media-man.
Regarding my reports published recently or otherwise, I take full responsibility and know the sanctity of each and every word that I contribute for this newspaper. It is media's basic responsibility to serve as a watchdog and keep a check on the government on behalf of the people but unfortunately the governments generally construe it as "enmity". It is good to see that our rulers have started appreciating the real role of the media.

He said since his name was mentioned in official statement, he would like to clear the record that he still had belief in truth of his news. This news about reference was informed to him by more than one sources close to the President. If govt has belief that news was true, it should be challenged in court. I would prove facts of my news in court.

“Radio is a medium that is entirely based on voice and sound. The personality of a person sitting behind the mike to some extent can be judged through various ways. Such as the topic he/she selects for listeners to comment on, the way he/she carries the topic, selection of music and most of all the way he/she entertains the callers on air”

Film Mohammad Ali film festival begins |
| |
A film festival to pay tribute to one of the top actors of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali, formally started at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, on Sunday. Speakers at the inaugural function held at the Arts Council’s gardens spoke about the art and persona of Mohammad Ali, who is one of the three greats of the Pakistani film industry, with legends Waheed Murad and Nadeem being the other two. Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan presided over the function. In his keynote speech as chief guest, Nadeem termed the late Ali as a great ambassador of Pakistani culture who earned laurels for himself and the country at large wherever he went. “He was innocent and humane, yet handsome and debonair and belonged to a rare breed of artistes in our country,” said Nadeem.Referring to Ali’s first film, Chiragh Jalta Raha, he said the lamp (chiragh) that the late star had lit decades ago was still burning and encouraging others. Poet Himayat Ali Shair said that Mohammad Ali earned fame and honour across the border in India and the rest of the world as well. Others who spoke included Salamat Ali Khan, Amin Yousuf, Pervez Mazhar and Syed Ahmed Shah.
