Attack on media, judiciary slammed |
| |
Leaders of different political parties at a demonstration on Sunday urged the masses to forge unity and protest against the illegal and barbaric actions taken against the judiciary and media by the rulers, who after watching the reaction of the masses had started their retreat. Speaking at the demo organised by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal at Liaquatabad Dakkhana, they said army rulers, who had dismissed a democratically elected government, were now trying to attack the two other state pillars – judiciary and media.

Media revolution |
| |
When President Musharraf came into power in 1999, the two crucial decisions which were a departure from the tradition of previous military dictators in Pakistan were refraining from imposing Martial Law and granting relative freedom to the media. This may not entirely have been the result of his belief in a democratic society and polity, but both these decisions proved correct and have paid dividends during the nearly eight years of General Musharraf’s incumbency.

Internet censorship |
| |
While the global uproar over the government’s recent attempts at gagging the mainstream media in Pakistan may lead it to a hands-off-the-media policy for now, it brings little relief to those nationalist media organs and groups whose websites continue to be blocked. Dozens of internet blogs and sites run by Baloch, Sindhi and even smaller ethnic groups continue to face the ban, with internet service providers forced by the government to apply filters to block their viewing in the country.

Ban on Indian films |
| |
The nationwide strike carried out recently by cinema owners underlines the need by the government to take some steps to revive the currently moribund film industry of Pakistan. The reason given for the strike by the chairman of the cinema association is in fact what he called government’s “unregulated” policy. It is no secret that the culture of going to the cinema is close to extinction in Pakistan. Accordingly, cinema owners have fallen on increasingly hard times, with the number of theatres falling from about 1,300 in 1970 to just a couple of hundred by 2005.

Fm listening | Reformatting the radio |

Morning and evening shows on FM channels have some significance for listeners as compared to shows at other hours. This is because the morning hours are a time when people want to hear music which would awaken their mind and soul and give them a reason to start the day. Whereas, the evening hours are a time when people look for some relaxing stuff to soothe their minds and let go of the whole day’s tiredness.
