Madrassa students warn press against printing ‘vulgar’ material
While the Lal Masjid administration Wednesday collected all cellphones from students of Jamia Hafsa to block the flow of any information to the outside world, the students have reportedly written a letter to different media organisations to avoid publication of "vulgar" material in their newspapers and magazines. The students, taking notice of publication of "vulgar and anti-Islam" material in various newspapers and magazines, have written a letter to their administrations to warn them against publishing such material, sources told The Post. "Pakistan is an Islamic state and all media organisations have to follow the Islamic rules and regulations while publishing any material," said the letter. The students warned that if the media organisations didn't mend their ways, "they would take every possible step to put an end to such practices".

  Media Protest
The right to public protest by I. A. Rehman
The government’s attempts to terrorise the media (and indirectly the lawyers and the people in general) into submission reached their peak with the raid on the Islamabad office of a TV organisation by a police contingent in full uniform and equipped with officially supplied weapons. The realisation that the incident had been seen by TV watchers across the globe prompted an unusual show of remorse and rehabilitation of the anchor who had been ordered off the channel a day earlier. No such consideration was shown to the other victims of police brutality that are not needed by the regime for its image-building.

Govt, lawyers asked to stop violence against journalists
Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has expressed its concern over the increasing incidents of violence against journalists while performing their duties since March 13, especially in and around the courts premises. The journalists were manhandled and their equipment were damaged in different incidents in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and some other towns, said a press release issued by the union on Wednesday. The PFUJ said that it respected all other professional bodies and always strived for truth and right causes in the best national interest. The struggle of working journalists for national causes and freedom of expression is well documented in the history of Pakistan, it added. The PFUJ has asked not only the government, but also the professional bodies of lawyers such as PBC, SCBA, and provincial and district bar associations to ensure the respect of all journalists covering the protest demonstrations.

  Television
Media initiative to build regional trust
A unique, private media initiative involving joint television programmes may do what political leaders in South Asia have failed to do so far — bring together the people of this fractious region. The initiative is being driven by a clutch of seven privately-owned television channels from five countries that will take advantage of pledges made at a summit of the eight-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in early April. Of the seven television channels, three are based in India while one each is from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. In addition to these five countries, SAARC includes Bhutan, the Maldives and new entrant Afghanistan, providing a potential viewership of 1.5 billion people. While in a few of these eight countries, the media is relatively underdeveloped and controlled by those in positions of power and authority, in most SAARC nations, the media is vibrant, fiercely independent and free of government influence. The latter group of countries would include those that have come together to launch the ‘Southasian’ television initiative.

Communication is most definitely a very essential aspect to our lives. It is only through conveying our emotions and thoughts to one another that we come to understand not only the world but ourselves as well. And in this modern era of technology, there are many ways through which we can communicate with each other, for example telephones, emailing, faxes etc. Though, in a country like Pakistan which has only just recently entered this era, development of various modes of communication has been slow but at the same time is steady and continues to grow.

Poet, cricketer join hands with lawyers
Support for suspended Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry swelled on Wednesday as a famous poet and a former Test cricketer attended a demonstration of lawyers outside the Supreme Court where the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) resumed the hearing into the presidential reference against the CJP. Ahmed Faraz and Majid Khan were prominent among the protesters. A huge number of protestors were seen on Constitutional Avenue, shouting slogans against President Gen Pervez Musharraf for suspending Justice Chaudhry. “We are here to show our solidarity with the judiciary the generals tried to bury by filing a reference against CJP,” Ahmad Faraz, a renowned poet, told reporters. “I think every poet with conscience is with the CJP. They believe the judiciary to be the main pillar of the state. General Musharraf should not be allowed to demolish it,” he said. Faraz, who came all the way from Peshawar to attend the protest, said some poets were still reluctant to join ongoing protests. “Yes. I participated in the protest in favour of the chief justice but I don’t want to offer any comment,” said Majid Khan when Daily Times sought his comments on the reference.
