Pakistan probes journalist death

Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has promised a judicial enquiry into the killing of a local journalist.

The body of Hayatullah Khan, 30, who reported the death of an alleged al-Qaeda commander, was found near Mir Ali in North Waziristan tribal region.

Mr Aziz's pledge came amid protests demanding the arrest of the killers.

Journalists throng streets to mourn fallen comrade

Rallies and processions to condemn the brutal killing of Hayatullah Dawar continued on Sunday, severely lashing out at the state-run agencies over the poor law and order situation. Journalists of Mardan district staged a protest demonstration against the tribal journalist, Hayatullah, which besides others was attended by district and tehsil nazims, traders, social organisations as well as political and religious figures.

PM announces judicial inquiry

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has announced a judicial inquiry into the killing of journalist Hayatullah Khan. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the prime minister also announced Rs 500,000 compensation for Hayatullah's family.

HR bodies should take up Munir's detention'

The father of Munir Mengal, managing director of Baloch Voice, a Balochi television channel, has appealed to human rights organisations to take note of his son's illegal detention by intelligence agencies. Abdul Karim Mengal, who went on hunger strike for the release of his son in Kalat on Sunday, told Daily Times those intelligence agencies had detained Munir Mengal for “his commitment to the promotion of the Balochi culture by establishing the first Baloch news channel”

Cable group complains of harassment

A television cable network of Badin on Sunday accused a local journalist of taking two cable connections and harassing the service providers. Speaking at a news conference at the Hyderabad press club here on Sunday, the seven partners of the cable network alleged that the newsmen had taken two connections, but had been refusing to pay monthly charges over the years.
