Media Protest CPNE condemns life attempt on Mahmud-ul-Aziz’s sister |
| |
The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has strongly condemned the brutal life attempt on Mahmud-ul-Aziz’s sister last week. Mr. Aziz is a veteran journalist and chief editor of the United Press of Pakistan (UPP). Mrs Atiya Ameenuddin was killed by unknown assailants during a robbery at her home. Syed Fasieh Iqbal, the President of CPNE and Wamiq Zuberi, Secretary General of the CPNE, condemning the depressing and heinous murder said, the law and order in the city especially in DHA is deteriorating. No one is safe anywhere and the establishment of the country is playing on the music of “sab theek hai”. Both of these CPNE senior officials appealed the Sindh government to take immediate measures to arrest the assailants. Mr. Iqbal and Mr. Zuberi also prayed for the lady and invoked Almighty for the rest and peace for her soul in the life hereafter. He also empathized with the family, who has lost a loving member and mother. Mr. Iqbal showed his deep association with Mr. Aziz and his family and assured him complete support of the CPNE to bring the assailants to justice. APNS has also condemned the incident.

Critique on Media Letter to Editor, “Disciplining the media” |
| |
Tehmina Afridi comments, “The media footage of the bomb blast that killed thirteen people in Islamabad on July 17 was extremely insensitive and totally unethical. Dead people and body parts lying around were broadcast live in the name of freedom of media. Many victims were half naked and soaked in blood — a horrible sight. Media is a powerful source of information but its blatant use for sensationalising issues is unacceptable. Many people are critical of the media circus witnessed during the Lal Masjid tragedy. All the channels broadcasting the events of Lal Masjid were hell bent on being the first to report new developments without bothering to check their validity. Some reporters were airing their own conspiracy theories on the June 17 blast in Islamabad. Such reporting can be extremely dangerous because it can easily misguide people. The media’s foremost role is to inform without lying. The role of analysis should be left to the analysts. There is dire need for some rules and regulations to minimize propaganda by the media. In the present condition the media instead of creating further terror and confusion should stick to mature and sensitive reporting.”

Media Miscellaneous Media must not sympathise with religious extremists: Musharraf |
| |
President General Pervez Musharraf was talking to a select group of owners and editors of the print and electronic media at his Camp Office in Rawalpindi on Wednesday morning. President Musharraf dwelt at length on the extremist challenge facing Pakistan as a nation and asked the media to put the national interest above personal or business compulsions. Specifically, he asked media owners and editors not to allow their organs to be used for the projection of the extremists. But he also acknowledged that his own political supporters in government and the ruling alliance needed to do more to stand up and be counted on the side of the forces of moderation. |

Are we ready for the revival of cinema? There's no cinema house in Islamabad! |
| |
Maria Tirmizi’s report, “It is ironic that Khuda Kay Liye hopes to trigger the revival of cinema in Pakistan when the capital city of the country does not have a single cinema house. A few years ago, Melody and NEFDEC were the only two cinemas in the city, if you exclude a shady little theatre called Kohsar in Sitara market, G/7 that is still showing sleazy, third-rated Punjabi films for a predominantly G/7 crowd. Melody cinema was built somewhere in the '60s, and being almost as old as Islamabad itself, held wonderful memories of the charm of the big screen for many old Islamabad families.”

Telecommunication Mobile towers ‘deadlier than hoardings’ |
| |
As local authorities attempt to remove billboards following last month’s deadly incidents during the rains, the provincial government sees mobile towers as another threat and says that they too need to be shifted to safer places. Government officials term mobile towers “more deadly than hoardings.” A senior official said initially the Sindh government was more concerned about radiation-related hazards associated with the cellular infrastructure, which were harmful for human life and health but the June 23 incidents explosed new threats of such towers. “We are in touch both with companies and the institutions concerned,” said Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Sindh Environment and Alternative Energy Minister. “We believe that these towers can cost more human life if they are affected in heavy rains. This needs to be addressed but at the same time it needs cooperation of every segment involved,” the minister added. He said the ministry initiated a campaign a few months back to shift telecom towers from residential areas on concerns over hazards caused though such infrastructure but last month’s rain related incidents which claimed more than 200 lives, pushed his ministry to take other dangers into account before finalising any strategy to shift the towers.
