GALLERY & CAFETERIA: Trying to build bridge by doling out favours!
By Nusrat Javed
Fully realising that all journalists of Islamabad were finding it extremely difficult to forget the gruesome murder of Hayatullah, the courageous reporter from North Waziristan , the Speaker made an intelligent move at the outset of the assembly sitting Monday. Admitting that an empty Press Gallery discourages legislators' active involvement in house proceedings, he requested the parliamentary reporters to return to it. In passing, he also recalled various initiatives the Prime Minister had already announced for assuaging the pain of Hayatullah's family while addressing the inaugural session of a conference that South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) held in Karachi Sunday morning.

LETTER TO EDITOR:
In Hayatullah's memory
It was 1998 when I met Hayatullah Khan for the first time in Mir Ali in Waziristan . The first hug of our Pushtoon tradition turned into an eternal friendship. My first contact with the hospitable, pleasant, lively and daredevil Hayatullah was such that it did not take even a minute for me to feel at home in his company. It was Friday when I reached Mir Ali, the shops were almost closed except for his PCO where he was waiting for me. After having a khewa, we both went to the nearby mosque. The lanky fellow seemed well-respected by the people of the village not only for his journalistic activities but for his gregarious disposition.

Hayatullah Khan's murder
Today, when I read the newspapers in the morning, I was shocked to know about the brutal murder of Hayatullah Khan, a prominent journalist who was killed in mysterious circumstances, after one of the local newspapers published a photo taken by him showing a missile made in the US that killed Abu Hamza Rabia. This photo is proof against the claim of government sources that had said the terrorist was killed on December 1, 2005 during manufacturing an explosive device in his house in Waziristan .

Journalist's death
THE death of tribal journalist Hayatullah Khan is tragic and the role of agencies suspicious, as his brother had been assured by local intelligence operatives and government officials that the family would hear something about him on or about June 15. The government should clarify the position.

Western journalism
Most of us hold the Western newspapers and their journalists in very high esteem, considering them paragons of all journalistic virtues. They dig deeply and thoroughly for facts. They are accurate in their reporting, choosing their words carefully.
