Professional hazards for journalists by Zubeida Mustafa |
| |
“Pakistan is a good example of how the deteriorating political conditions have hit the media most acutely. Shaky military governments have cracked down on the press and the electronic media the hardest believing that they can set things right by shooting the messenger so that the message does not reach the people. But it does not happen that way any more because today information has its way of reaching the people — thanks to the invention of new technology.”

Media Miscellaneous Pemra bill intact, being made more venomous: Rabbani |
| |
The opposition claimed on Tuesday that the Pemra Amendment Ordinance had not been withdrawn, adding that another much stricter ordinance was being framed to gag the media in the run-up to the general elections.Speaking at a news conference here at the Parliament House, the leader of the opposition in the Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani, charged that it was a lie that the recent media-related ordinance had been withdrawn. The ordinance is very much intact, he said, adding that had the government been sincere, it could have withdrawn it within no time, simply by issuing a directive. Rabbani said the ordinance like a sword was hanging over the head of media to bar it from covering rallies of the chief justice.
President Pervez Musharraf had promulgated the Pemra (Amendment) Ordinance, 2007 on June 4, triggering demonstrations and rallies by journalists, lawyers and the opposition parties, which had dubbed the ordinance as “the blackest” of black laws. “Another more lethal ordinance is being framed, which will be part of the government’s rigging strategy to regulate the media and to see how much time is being given to the government and the opposition on TV channels, and which programme must be aired and which not,” he claimed.

Pakistan is a pluralistic society. Pakistan has a very free and a vibrant media and the credit for that, to a very large extent … goes to President Musharraf … when he took over there was only one channel, the Pakistan Television, PTV. That's it. Now there are so many that I can't count."

'Agahi Zaroori Hai' campaign |
| |
Majority rejects discrimination against women. Response to a media campaign based on interactive questions initiated by the Ministry of Women Development recently shows that majority of the people rejected discrimination against women in education, property and marriage-related issues. The campaign titled "Agahi Zaroori Hai" was launched under the project of "Community campaign to prevent violence against women including media," at a total cost of Rs 38 million. The initiative that lasted for over two months, four questions were prepared that addressed the most common unjust behaviours prevalent in the society. These questions were then published in some of the leading Urdu language dailies besides being aired on Pakistan Television. The respondents were promised prizes through a lucky draw. Media expert Naveeda Sultan told 'The News' on Wednesday that it was a pilot project. She termed it a first step forward to make masses aware of women's rights. "This will in turn lead to preventing violence against women," she said. She pointed out that because of limited funds, only a few newspapers and one television channel was involved in the process. She conceded that a wider media campaign could bring in real change in public behaviour.
