‘Condition for journalists deteriorating'

The Standing Committee of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) has taken serious notice of the deteriorating condition being faced by journalists, says a press release. At a meeting held here on Wednesday, CPNE president Arif Nizami presented a detailed report on harassment and victimisation of journalists from January 2006 to July 2006.

The Standing Committee of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) Wednesday took a serious notice of the deteriorating conditions being faced by mediamen. The meeting was held here with CPNE President Arif Nizami in the chair.
On the occasion, he presented a detailed report of harassment and victimisation of journalists from January 2006 to July 2006.

Defence secretary confirms lack of operational control over ISI, MI

Defence Secretary General (retd) Tariq Waseem Ghazi confirmed in his sworn affidavit filed in the Sindh High Court on Wednesday that the ministry of defence had no operational control over the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), and therefore it could not enforce the court's direction on both agencies in detention matters. Pursuant to an earlier order of the court, the defence secretary filed a personal affidavit on the petition challenging the detention of Munir Mengal, head of a Dubai-based TV channel ‘Voice of Baloch'.

Former Peshawar High Court judge, senior lawyers and journalists on Wednesday rejected the reported “in-camera proceedings” of a judicial commission into the inquiry of tribal journalist Hayatullah Khan's murder.

Hayatullah's murder: Legal experts term inquiry tribunal illegal

Legal experts at a dialogue declared the inquiry tribunal, set up by the government in the Hayatuallah Khan's murder, as illegal, saying the act was not extended to FATA and suggested the government to either directly move the case under section 302 or avoid in-camera proceedings of the inquiry tribunal.

Reservations expressed over Hayatullah probe

Legal experts here on Wednesday expressed reservations over the decision of in-camera proceedings of inquiry commission constituted to probe the murder of Hayatullah, a tribal journalist killed in Mir Ali, North Waziristan Agency last month. Speaking at a seminar titled “Anti-journalistic steps and future of Pakistan ” held under the auspices of Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ).

A number of journalists boycotted Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Khwaja Khalid Farooq and DIG Operations Aamir's joint press conference, when they came late at the conference hall of Police Lines, Qila Gujjar Singh Wednesday. According to reporters, they habitually come late at press conferences.

Hello quake hit people — This is Radio FM 99

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has launched a radio programme to update earthquake affected people affecting their recovery. The programme, launched in collaboration with the media wing of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) will be aired in Islamabad and earthquake-affected areas.
