One doesn't know whether to laugh or to cry after reading a news report according to which the federal government has released five billion rupees to oil marketing companies (OMCs), especially given that the latter have in recent years made substantial profits thanks partly to the government letting them fix oil prices for several years. The money has been released to clear arrears amounting to almost 21 billion rupees that the government apparently owes to the OMCs and refineries because of price differential claims made by the companies.

CPNE meets in Quetta on 28 th
The CPNE Secretary General Mr Muhammad Aslam Kazi has announced that a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPNE is being held on Monday, August 28, 2006 at Quetta . The meeting shall discuss the Government-Press relations especially in Balochistan and other parts of the country. The Governor Balochistan Mr Owais Ahmed Ghani will brief the national editors over the situation of the press in the province.

Chief Justice of Pakistan , Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has said that independent judiciary and free press are vital to the protection of rights of the people and growth of a healthy society.

Journalist's house looted
Dacoits took away Rs 30,000, gold ornaments, a cell phone and costly perfumes from the house of Dawood Ahmed, a journalist working with an Islamabad-based newspaper. About a fortnight ago, a thief opened the door of his car parked outside his home and took away some cash from it.
