Protest over Sohail Qalnader's missing |

There is still no trace about missing Resident Editors of Daily Express Peshawar Sohail Qalander. 18 days has passed since the mysterious disappearance. Political and social organizations have termed the missing a great tragedy. Ex. Senior Minister NWFP Siraj ul Haq has shown solidarity with family. He appealed the abductors to release Mr. Qalander on humanitarian grounds. Journalists’ organizations all over country have also condemned the incident. PPP leader Ch. Gulam Abbas has termed the government's silence a tragedy.

Condemnation for decision to deprive Journalists from Accreditation cards |

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condemned the decision to deprive journalists from accreditation cards. They have protested the decision taken by Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister for Information. Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister for Information has advised that only four journalists of each paper would be given accreditation cards. It would deprive other members of the community from cards. Now huge number of the journalists would not be in position to avail facilities allocated for the journalists' community.

Media free, claims Saifullah |

Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Salim Saifullah Khan has said that the media were enjoying unprecedented freedom in the country because of the government’s policies of openness. Addressing a large public gathering in the Sarai Naurang area on Saturday, the minister claimed that the government believed in freedom of the press and had taken bold steps in this regard. He said that during previous governments, different measures were taken to gag the press on one pretext or the other, but the present government had removed them. The minister thanked President Gen Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for approving development funds for the southern districts of the NWFP. He said that projects like supply of gas, roads and construction of roads would usher in a new era of development in these areas.

Nawa-e-Waqt editorial over Sohail Qalander's missing for last few weeks. There is no trace about mysterious disappearance. Journalists are concerned about safety of community members. Higher authorities should take prompt actions for safe recovery and ensure protection for media community.

Naukhaiz Shah from University of Karachi writes to Editor, Sir: It has been a decade since struggles were made for the media’s freedom, which hasn’t been attained yet. Journalists throughout the world are valued because they render to public the important service of providing information. But unfortunately in Pakistan they are being attacked, abducted and killed. How can a country progress in which journalists are being suppressed, and where advertisements are used as a lever to put pressure on the media?
