NGO points out challenges being faced by tribal journalists |
| |
Says numerous reporters killed in the line of duty | Govt showing ‘one-sided picture’ of tribal areas
The Individual-land, a non-government organisation, in its support for tribal journalists has stated, “Tribal journalists are usually pressured both by the government and the militants. All parties to the conflict in Waziristan insist that their dead are martyrs. The media are under pressure to refer to dead soldiers as ‘martyrs’ and the militants as ‘terrorists’ and ‘miscreants’. Never mind if the government and the military eventually sign peace agreements with the same ‘terrorists’ and army generals sometimes refer to militants’ commander Baitullah Mahsud as ‘soldier of peace’ and then start condemning him as terrorist.” In a report on tribal journalists, the NGO stated, Frequently, media’s access to the scene of action in FATA is blocked and trouble spots are declared as ‘no-go’ areas for journalists. “Newsmen were kept out of Bajaur Agency on two occasions in 2006: when a US pilot less plane attacked Damadola village in January to destroy a suspected Al-Qaeda hideout, and then in October when the Pakistan Army claimed responsibility for a missile strike against a religious seminary in which 80 young students and their teachers were killed.”

Radio Baloch not getting due share of radio jobs |
| |
The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) is moving its Balochistan-based posts to other radio stations across the country and appointing non-locals to these posts, Daily Times learnt on Sunday. Sources at PBC Quetta complained that in past they used to grumble that non-Baloch were being appointed to various posts at the nation’s foremost broadcasting corporation. “The PBC now even has started moving the posts from Balochistan to other provinces,” they said. “This is unethical and unacceptable. We will raise the issue on the floor of the Balochistan Assembly,” Balochistan leader of the opposition Kachkol Baloch told Daily Times. He said the government was “pleasing” other provinces at the cost of Balochistan and its people.

FM Listening | Power-99 FM seeks out new height |
| |
Power 99 FM enjoys making experiments with new things and ideas. Now the transmission of the channel has been divided into two parts - news and current affairs, and entertainment. The news and current affairs part is in its early phase and needs a long-time to grow up whereas the entertainment part is improving day by day. Some new voices and return of few RJs on the channel is a refreshing development. The arrival of a female voice, Sonia Khan’s, on the channel, seems to have broken the hegemony of male RJs. Before her arrival, they were virtually dominating the channel. Female voice then was audible either in the ads or on ‘Power News’. Sonia Khan has recently joined Power 99 FM and is hosting the morning show. Her voice is not new to the regular listeners of FM channels as they have heard her on FM 101 prior to her coming here.

Punjab fails to do homework on cell-phone jammers |
| |
The federal government's refusal to allow the use of directional cellular jammers (DCJ) in Punjab's jails remained the subject for debate among public servants last week. The Punjab government sanctioned a sum of Rs 75.15 million in September last to install cell-phone jammers, operating within a one-kilometer radius, in all jails to stop the use of cellphones on jail premises. It is viewed that the Home Department failed to plead the case for mobile-phone jammers with the federal government. The federal government rejected the request on the grounds that it would affect cellphone service in adjoining areas. On the other hand, it was obvious that the home secretary had not done his homework and failed to convince the federal government on the matter. The funds sanctioned for the purpose are going to lapse without being used. It remains to be seen whether the Punjab government allocates funds for the same purpose again.
