Critique on Media SPO says media neglected flood victims |
| |
The victims of cyclone and floods in Sindh and Balochistan did not receive befitting attention of civil society largely because of the neglected reporting in the mainstream national media. This was observed by panellists in an interactive discussion titled as 'Disaster Watch', hosted by the Rural Development Policy Institute (RDPI) and Practical Action South Asia. "The de-prioritisation of media had negative effects on the corresponding rescue and relief activities of both state and non-state actors," asserted Haris Khaleeq of Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO). Ambreen Arshad, a Karachi based journalist, said that more than 20 days after the flood, the government agencies were still stuck in the rescue phase.

Telecommunication Mobile users warned of fake prize schemes |
| |
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Friday cautioned cellphone users to be aware of hoax calls and false messages luring subscribers to buy scratch cards and then notify coded numbers to the calling party or sender of the SMS for cash prizes. A PTA spokesman said that mobile customers were advised to be mindful of receiving hoax/unsolicited calls and messages informing the customers that he/she had won a cash prize. But in order to retrieve the prize, he/she had to inform the calling party the hidden numbers on prepaid scratch cards. According to a statement issued here on Friday, in case of receiving such calls and messages, mobile phone users should immediately contact their cellular operators for the verification of the information. The spokesman added that some instances had also been reported in which cellphone users were deprived of their prepaid balance by replying to a particular SMS. |

Outflows nullify foreign investment: Telecom sector |
| |
The outflow of foreign exchange for import of mobile phones and other apparatus has almost neutralised the impact of foreign investment made in the telecommunication sector in the last fiscal year. The import bill of mobile phones witnessed an 18 per cent increase to $670 million due to rising demand of cellphones during the 2006-07. The overall imports of the telecommunication sector surged by 13 per cent to $1.347bn, the highest among the machinery group, during the year under review. The telecom sector during the first 11 months (July-May) of 2006-07 had attracted a foreign investment of $1.482 billion, which was highest among other sectors. However, the balance sheet of import bill and investment (inflows $1.347bn and outflows $1.482bn) showed neutral impact of foreign inflows in this sector. It had been claimed by the government that the huge foreign investment was made in the telecom sector but never discussed the overall impact of this investment on the sector. The telecom sector witnessed the highest growth in the country and the government estimated that the growth in mobile phone sector would continue with the same pace at least till 2010.
