PID’s poor arrangements to cover
The PID, Lahore, did not make proper arrangements for journalists invited to cover the PM’s function at Allama Iqbal Medical College on Monday. Whilst security was tight, there was no one at reception to guide journalists. Later, the PID also refused to facilitate reporters in the hall. Journalists had to tussle with Pakistan Baitul Maal officials and security personnel for seats. PID director Muhammad Ashraf watched the situation from a safe distance. “We cannot offer you any seats. Grab a seat in the hall where you can on your own,” he told this correspondent.

PFUJ vows to launch campaign for wage award
A meeting of the federal executive council of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) held here from Aug 17 to 19 reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of the press and expression and resolved to wage a campaign against newspaper owners if they failed to implement the 7th Wage Award before Eidul Fitr. The meeting also resolved to resist attempts to curtail press freedom either by the management of newspaper organisations or the government, political parties or ethnic pressure groups. The meeting expressed deep concern over increasing incidents of violence against journalists, attacks on media centres and threats, particularly in Waziristan and other tribal areas. The meeting assailed the killing of journalists and threats to their families, especially in Balochistan and the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas. The meeting resolved not to accept any ‘code of conduct’ which went against the principles of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, and demanded immediate withdrawal of the amended Pemra Ordinance and other draconian laws

Democracy and freedom of expression by Wajih Abbasi
“The independence of the judiciary will really help the nation when the rule of law, equal protection of the law and due process will be ensured without any discrimination of class, creed, social position, faith and political considerations. We will only enjoy our rights when we will be prepared to allow those rights to our opponents. We will be able to freely express our views only when we will allow views opposed to our own.”

Rise of cyber-terrorism by M Ismail Khan
“Pakistan is extremely vulnerable in terms of information security; lack of awareness, legal safeguards and enforcement mandates puts Pakistan's growing internet community at massive risks. Being a country still grappling with issues of conventional criminal justice system, establishment of effective legal and enforcement capacity, fighting cyber crime may not be a priority area. However, since we have now entered in an age where no business, media and or governance system can function properly without ensuring information security, let us hope that the country would not postpone action on cyber crimes indefinitely.”
