The Post Editorial “Shackles on the media”
“While President General Musharraf prefers to present himself as the divine harbinger and sole benefactor of press freedom during his years at the helm of affairs, the reality remains that the relative and selective freedom enjoyed by the press during his regime is part of an extended spectrum of courageous struggle waged by conscientious journalists over the decades. Naturally, the constraints upon this freedom and blemishes on our record of press freedom, just like the mitigating aspects, too remain part of the same spectrum. The rulers of this country have never relished a free press and their perennial desire to muzzle the press is evinced by their persistent efforts at legislative measures that cripple the press. Apart from draconian measures like press laws, prolonged periods of blanket censorship, flogging of journalists, arraigning them on fake criminal charges and banning publications, we also have an unenviable history of novelties like the National Press Trust. Credit for the current strictly limited freedom that the press enjoys in this country goes to the journalists who have braved the paralyzing shackles of self-censorship and a succession of insensitive governments. This struggle must continue because it is closely tied to the fate of democracy and the people of this country.”

  Newsman’s death condoled
A nationwide convention of journalists should be set up to discuss strategies regarding the review of service structure and modes of employment with the employers. This demand was put forward at a journalists’ forum on Saturday convened to offer condolences on the death of a cameraman, Arif Khan, who was killed in a bomb blast while covering PPP’s rally on Thursday. The resolution was tabled by the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and was unanimously accepted by the participants. The forum also stressed the need for the provision of life insurance and job security to the journalists besides modern equipment to the cameramen. KUJ president Shamim-ur-Rahman announced all-out support to the bereaved family of Mr Khan. “The question here arises whether the organisations for which we are working are contributing accordingly or not. Journalists are under threat and in the coming days we have to be more alert and cautious”, he warned.
