Journalist ‘missing' since March
A journalist working with a private television news channel has gone missing since March while filming a military base used by US forces, his company said on Wednesday.
The whereabouts of Mukesh Rupeta remained unknown since March when he was arrested by police for filming the Shahbaz airbase in Jacobabad, a Geo television spokesman said in a statement.“The only available report with regard to Rupeta was that he has been detained by the authorities,” he said.
After repeated queries, officials accused Rupeta of filming the Jacobabad airbase for which he was detained and interrogated, he added.

IFJ appalled by recent spate of violence against Pakistani media workers, and murder of abducted journalist
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has condemned growing violence against media workers in Pakistan after a series of incidents across the country, including the murder of abducted senior journalist Hayatullah Khan.
In the southern province of Sindh alone there have been six separate acts of violence against journalists in the last month, according to IFJ affiliate the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ)
"This recent spate of ruthless and senseless attacks against media workers is appalling, and demonstrates a decline in press freedom in Pakistan ," said IFJ president, Christopher Warren.

Discriminatory cable TV tax: Lower classes will be hurt, operators crippled
ISLAMABAD : A new Federal Excise Duty charge of Rs. 25 per cable television subscriber levied on cable TV operators in the Finance Budget 2006-07 is likely to be disastrous for this largely cottage industry, says a spokesman of the Cable TV Operators Association of Pakistan which has desperately appealed for a repeal of the tax. “It will not only cripple our operations but also force a large number of businesses to close down. It seems CBR has taken this decision in bureaucratic ignorance and for minimal gains by ignoring the huge cost to society as a whole.”

Opinion:
Breathing space : Access to information
By Farrukh Khan Pitafi
These days the government never ceases to take credit for liberalising the media in the country. Directly connected to the issue of the freedom of the press is the critical problem of access to information. While the government promises to take immediate steps to bolster the access to crucial information, what is often overlooked is the fact that in third world half-baked democracies, the actual bottleneck is not censorship as much as the twin spectres of mismanagement and corruption. Only those closets are not opened that have some skeletons to hide or, worse still, the keys to which are lost owing to the sheer negligence of its owner or operator.
