  Critique on Media
Letter to Editor, “Role of media”
  S. wahab comments, “Sitting far away in Canada and following the coverage of these very crucial times back home in Pakistan, I am really at a loss to understand the role of both the print and electronic media. It is indeed very disappointing to note a certain bias in a majority of shows and in articles and analysis that I read. There are talk shows galore; the hosts make it look like a courtroom where they have lawyers arguing endlessly on matters that are under the scrutiny of the High Courts and the Supreme Court. It is always nice to hear facts, but then the discussions are deliberately dragged against the government. I am delighted to see the judiciary free and independent, but some questions do pop up in my mind. One for example is how does it translate into justice for the common man, who is entangled in the lower courts system for ages? I hope I will see some positive improvements soon.”

Letter to editor Information ministry’s problems
Muhammad Abdal Hameed, “Our information ministry is the most misinformed ministry, not knowing how to do even the most elementary things that it is supposed to do. Watch any news conference arranged by it. You will see a jungle of microphones in front of the speaker. These are not to record anything but just to put the logos in front of the camera so that the channels may give the impression that their reporters were there. Only very few channels have audio recorders in place; others get free publicity due to the ignorance of the ministry. The Ministry has yet to learn that it should place just two mikes of its own, without any logo on it. The mikes should lead to a hub where any channel may plug in its audio recorder, away from cameras. That will be equality for all. Every news conference has a crowd of unruly reporters, each clamouring to get attention, all creating a cacophony by speaking at the same time. Anybody with an accreditation card from the ministry can get in. Then it is free for all.”

PTA groping for remedy thru’ SMS verification: Illegal mobile connections
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has asked the interior ministry to devise an SMS verification system to deal with the issuance of unauthorized cell phone connections. Sources told Dawn on Tuesday that the cell phone companies had submitted a proposal to the PTA regarding verification of new connections from the National Database and Registration Authority by sending an SMS (short message service) to it. They said the PTA had forwarded the recommendation to the interior ministry to take a decision. Verification of new connections by Nadra, they said, usually took about 15 to 20 days and the operators wanted some speedy and cost-effective alternative system. They said through the proposed SMS system a franchise dealer would verify the identity of an applicant by sending an SMS to the Nadra’s official concerned and would receive the response within minutes. Had the PTA taken up the issue a bit earlier instead of canalizing its energies in introducing the over Rs5 billion project of Mobile Number Portability that had yet to click, they said, the issue would have been resolved by now.

  Letter to editor, “PTCL services”
Aggrieved Citizen, “The PTCL had a new ad on the front page of Dawn on Aug 17 about the ‘New PTCL’ and all the changes they want to bring about or have introduced. Perhaps someone from the billing or the administrative section would like to explain the new ‘Broadband line rent’ in our telephone bills for July. Our both phones (4910459 and 4926273) have been more ‘dead’ than alive during this period; again no dial tone for the last 12 days at least, though in all fairness one of them did ring once last night (Aug 16). And we most certainly have no broadband connection for which a line rent has been charged. In fact, when we tried to get a DSL connection, the lines were/are so bad that they failed and could not operate the system. I wait with bated breath for the phones to start working again and for someone to explain the new charge.”
