Kidnapping TV journalist kidnapped, tortured |
| |
A journalist belonging to a local TV channel was kidnapped by four armed law enforcers riding a car with tinted glasses. The personnel, after subjecting him to severe torture, dumped him near the National Stadium. They also threatened him with dire consequences in case he reported the matter to anybody. Khurram was kidnapped by four men from the limits of Karachi Press Club and after torture lasting several hours released and threw him near National Stadium late on Tuesday night. A family member on anonymity said that on Tuesday Khurram went out for office work and was present at the Election Commission Office. On being informed that some journalists were baton-charged outside the Karachi Press Club, he moved there for coverage. While he was standing at the CNG pump and surveying the arrest of journalists a black car with tinted glasses approached him and its occupants bundled him into it and drove him to an unknown destination, where they tortured him by hitting him with clubs on his knees and backbone and subjected him to severe interrogation. Later at night the four security personnel put him in the car and threw him near National Stadium threatening him not to report to any higher authority. A taxi driver passing by saw him lying on the road took him in his taxi and left him at the house throwing his national identity card next to him. |

Muzzling the media |

For over two weeks now, we have been witnessing a series of disturbing events after the imposition of the emergency, the rationale behind which is baseless. Now, the rulers are insisting that stability was more important than democracy, plus they have found a ‘new danger’ to nuclear assets, which necessitated the continuation of the incumbent.

World TV Day commemorated |

The World TV Day was observed throughout the world on November 21 as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996. Ironically, however, in Pakistan the most important means of information – that is, television — is braving against all odds and is facing oppression at the hands of the government.

The Post Editorial “Journalists’ arrests” |
| |
During a meeting with a delegation of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), caretaker Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Nisar A Memon informed the IFJ delegation that the present stalemate in the government-media relations is temporary. However, the leader of the delegation, Kanak Dixit, a Nepalese journalist, has said the international media stands by their Pakistani colleagues. Democracy and a free media are interlinked. The real reason behind this situation is that the government could not actually stop the mushroom growth of media outlets due to the media revolution in the 21st century. Without freedom of the press there could be no concept of democracy in any country. If the government continues this attitude, there are bleak chances of holding free and fair elections on January 8, 2008. All the international media is worried about curbs imposed on the media in Pakistan. If the government has some complaints against the media, these could be sorted out at the negotiating table. Those present at the helm of affairs expect and want responsibility from the national press sans freedom. They are not aware of the fact that responsibility and freedom are interlinked and cannot be separated from each other for any reason. |

Peaceful defiance |
| |
As a symbol of what they called ‘peaceful defiance’, protesting journalists of Karachi presented fresh roses to police personnel posted outside the press club on Wednesday, a day after protesting media personnel had been baton-charged at the same place. Earlier, they held a protest meeting as part of their campaign against the imposition of emergency and curbs on the media. The meeting, organised by the Karachi Union of Journalists, condemned Tuesday’s police action in which several journalists were wounded and detained for hours. The meeting demanded that the emergency be lifted and Pemra ordinance be repealed forthwith, saying it was aimed at gagging the press. |

Editorial “Attack on media again” |
| |
“Journalists have vowed to carry on the struggle for press freedom. But it is important that it should not be seen as an exclusive one by the members of the media as one saw the lawyers’ protest when they took to the streets in March. Such protests are civil society’s response to the government’s attempt to put down dissent. By the same token, it is a positive development that other civil society groups fighting for fundamental rights have joined hands with the journalists. After all they are fighting for the same goal — an end to the emergency and a restoration of all fundamental rights. Besides media freedom affects them as much as the media workers. There is strength in numbers and the government will have to pay heed to voices of dissent. As for the city and town administrations, one can only ask them to get the police to exercise restraint. It is not a sign of strength to beat up peaceful demonstrators.”

“The marches, the candle-lit vigils, the meetings that continue to take place should too act as a reminder to the regime that police batons cannot suppress the will of people; they cannot silence voices and they cannot prevent deep feelings from being expressed in one way or the other. Simultaneously with the rally in Karachi, journalists had also marched in other cities across the country. And, such protests, that are bringing more and more elements of civil society together, will undoubtedly continue -- no matter how much force is used -- for, the strength of sentiments ignited by the measures taken, including the removal of judges and the ban on media channels, means that the flames of passionate protest will not easily be snuffed out.”

Daily Times Editorial “Insane violence against journalists” |
| |
“The situation today is that, instead of the national media presenting a positive “alternative” view of the government, there is solidarity being expressed by the global media with what is being viewed as a suppressed community in Pakistan. The caretakers should take note of this situation and immediately put a stop to any violence they plan against valid protest. The issue will finally go before the next elected government — if the January 8 date is met — and will be resolved by it. In the interim, General Musharraf should lift his draconian regulations. The caretakers should strongly recommend it, otherwise the elections will be de-legitimised.”

Ban on news channels |
| |
Muhammad Yousuf, “The government imposed a ban on TV news channels immediately after the imposition of emergency. The government has accused the channels of defaming government functionaries and showing live violence. But what about state-owned PTV? Isn't PTV showing violence by the Indian army on Kashmiri civilians? If the broadcasting of violence by a non-Muslim army on Muslim civilians is justified, then why not violence by Muslims against Muslims?
The government is trying to bar the channels from showing the truth. The government should immediately lift the curbs on the media and stop violating the people's right to know.”

“The suppression of the media, previously seen in the cancellation of government ads, the closure of channels and the targeted killings of journalists, has assumed even more blatant dimensions: the unwarranted, violent crackdown against protesting journalists in Karachi and Hyderabad is the new nadir. The only targets of oppression by the government in an Emergency allegedly enforced because of the rising tide of extremism in the country are the moderate elements: the judiciary, activists of liberal and centrist political parties and now, the media.”

PTV attacks US diplomats |
| |
The government controlled TV has initiated a campaign against all those western diplomats posted in Pakistan who have been expressing solidarity with the journalists and criticising other government restrictions. A PTV anchor on Wednesday evening devoted his show to castigate the US diplomats for criticising the crackdown on the media, imposition of emergency rule and suspension of Constitution and massive arrests of distinguished people from the civil society. US ambassador Anne W Patterson was also targeted for her expression of solidarity with the journalists. She had visited the Geo TV offices the other day. The US counsel general in Karachi was also brought under severe criticism for her visit to the Karachi Press Club to sympathise with the journalists, who were brutalised by the police. Former diplomats and commentators were invited in the show to attack diplomats in Pakistan for their 'indecent and undiplomatic' conduct. The diplomats who were targeted in the programme were not afforded the opportunity to explain their points of view. |

IPF award for journalist |
| |
A leading press freedom body honoured four journalists on Tuesday for their work in countries it said were highly dangerous for reporters, including a former member of AFP caught up in Pakistan’s political turmoil. Mazhar Abbas, of the ARY One World Television, which was shut down by authorities amid political turmoil in the country, was among the four handed the International Press Freedom Award here by the Committee to Protect Journalists. Mr Abbas is a former Karachi bureau chief for AFP and secretary-general of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, where he has led opposition to President Gen Pervez Musharraf, the CPJ said in a statement. “It appears the (Pakistani) government has launched a war on terror against the media,” Mr Abbas told a blue-ribbon assembly at the award ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York
