Visual artists strongly resist, oppose 'hijacking' of National Art Gallery |
| |
Led by eminent visual artists appointed by the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) to curate the inaugural show of the country's most significant art project in six decades, the visual art community -- from Khyber to Karachi -- is strongly reacting against what they call the "hijacking of the National Art Gallery by performing arts." Visual artists are opposed to renaming of the National Art Gallery as Pakistan Centre of the Creative Arts and are adamant that the name on which the project was initiated and executed be retained. "Please help the art community of Pakistan to get back the National Art Gallery," reads an email message circulated by Nilofar Farrukh, one of the curators of the gallery.

Visual artists see a lot in change of name: National Art Gallery |
| |
Just days before its opening, the National Art Gallery has been renamed as the National Centre of Creative Arts to the shock of the visual arts community in the country. Top visual artists expressed the fear that this action of the Ministry of Culture was an attempt to undermine the very concept for which the gallery was founded. They suspected that the motive behind the renaming was to expand the national art gallery project to include “all forms of performing arts”. It was meant to be one of the country’s largest and most significant art projects in six decades - a home to some of the rarest works by the nation’s greatest masters like Sadequain, Chughtai and Shakir Ali to name a few.

Media trials: Ijaz Ahsan |
| |
The Kamran Khan who interviewed President Musharraf on Monday was not the Kamran Khan whose programme had been banned. A friend said he had asked all the necessary questions. True; but when Musharraf answered, Kamran did not follow it up with the obvious objections that come to mind. For example, orders for such a major action as attacking a very popular media channel cannot come from anyone below the rank of SP or DIG. Now I ask you, dear reader, which SP is there who could have attacked Geo without clearance from the government? Well, if the President did not order the attack, who did it? Was it the IG, the interior secretary, interior minister, or prime minister? These are the only other persons who could have given the order. Why are they not being summoned and questioned? Alternatively, the police inspector should be asked who ordered him, and the matter should be taken all the way up.

Press under siege | Enough, isn’t it?, Sadaf Arshad |
| |
“Media forms an integral part of statehood in this era of information. I have great regard and respect for the media…I am a firm believer in the freedom of the press.” This statement was given by President Pervez Musharraf in his speech five days after the 1999 coup. During these years, he has been bragging about freedom of the press to convey a message to the international community about the amount of ‘freedom’ the press has in this country.”
