A daily review of media coverage of media and communications issues.
  Critique on Media
Letter to editor “pen power”
Asfandyar Khan comments, “My dear Pakistani writers, journalists, thinkers, scholars, editors and newspaper owners please review and re-evaluate what you are doing. In pursuit of your anti government agenda, you are in the longer run hurting Pakistan more than positively contributing to nation building. Everyday you put the newspaper down in frustration thinking that sooner or later Pakistan will collapse thus inadvertently cultivating despondency among the people. Is nothing good happening in Pakistan? Dear editors, I am sure you have inside stories of every political and diplomatic move and are fully aware of its motives. Counter it for the sake of Pakistan. This nation needs you to help build its pride and image and not plunge into a depression.”

  Durrani unlikely to be removed
Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani is unlikely to be removed from his present position following a series of high-level meetings, putting to rest speculations that he was being replaced by his junior minister. The minister is said to be ‘out of the danger zone’ following these meetings including the one he held with President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday. Sources claimed that the Presidency decided to continue with the present information minister instead of going for a change of face at a time when the government is already in deep crisis over the judicial row.

Pemra gives licenses to five new TV channels
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) would issue licenses to five new television channels — Masala TV, Dunya TV, Prime Pakistan, ATV and Dawn News -at a ceremony to be held on Saturday. Meanwhile, the landing rights will also be given to Musik, Fashion TV, Discovery TV, Punjab TV, Star TV and Din News. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani will award the licenses and landing rights at the Pemra office. The issuance of licenses is in line with President Pervez Musharraf’s vision of free and independent media, which has opened up the skies of Pakistan for diverse and reputed national and international channels breaking up the monopoly of PTV once for all. Besides these TV channels Pakistan is envisioned to make progress in the field of Direct to Home (DTH) service. The PTV has earmarked an amount of Rs3,500 million for development of DTH. The DTH will permeate the media to all parts of Pakistan and will provide quality multiple channels to the subscribers without an interface of the cable operators and by the end of this year there will be three DTH operators in Pakistan competing to provide quality service to the people of Pakistan. On the digital side, by the end of this year 30 licenses will be issued to the Multi Channel Multi Distribution (MMD), which will provide wireless services to the people and will make possible the reception of the channels where there is no cable operation. Another initiative of this government is Internet Protocol TV. At the end of the year there will be three companies providing services of Internet, TV channel and Communication facility through single node, opening up entire new vistas of digital technology to the people of Pakistan with the objective to improve the quality of life of the people and bring them at par with developed nations in the field of electronic media. The government is also giving landing right to the Pakistani and foreign channels.

Fm listening | of listeners and friendly FMs by Sehrish Wasif
Various brands and variety of music has become the hallmark of FM channels. People generally recall FM channels through the type of music played on them. It won't be wrong to say that there are certain FM channels that are solely depending on one type of music and attracting listeners through it. Talking about community based FM channels, no doubt these radio channels are giving more and more space to music and entertainment and have allotted time for the masses to come and share their personal issues and get some good counselling.
