The journalist community Monday boycotted the press briefing of Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC), chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz here. Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Dr Akram Sheikh gives briefing to media about the decisions taken by the ECNEC. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz chairs the meeting who is also the Chairman of Planning Commission. On Monday the journalists were informed to attend the briefing at 4.00 p.m. The media reached P block, Pak Secretariat well before the time. However, at 4.15 p.m they were told that the briefing had been delayed for an hour as Principal Information Officer of Press Information Department would arrive at 5.00 p.m. The journalists stayed there till 4.40 p.m and then requested to start the briefing as Deputy Chairman Dr Akram Sheikh was present in his office. But Dr, Asif Sheikh, the spokesman of the PC made an excuse, saying as the meeting was chaired by the Premier, therefore, the presence of PIO was a must. They again pleaded either to start the briefing or distribute press releases at least. But the spokesman again showed his inability to do so that prompted the media to boycott the briefing. |

| |
The up-gradation of the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) library will begin next month, said a PNCA official while talking to Daily Times. He said currently, the PNCA library had 3,000 books and more than 50 percent of them were out-dated and irrelevant. “Most of these books are of no interest to people and are useless,” he said, adding that the library was attracting few visitors due to the unavailability of relevant books. |

Telecommunication VIEW: Mobile phones, a new development tool —Syed Mohammad Ali |
| |
“Internet Radio for Justice in the Congo is one example of this combined use of the radio and the mobile phone to promote good governance. Broadcasting a participatory radio show which uses short message service (SMS) has enabled listeners to ask questions about justice and human rights to a panel of Congolese and United Nations (UN) officials, who answer these questions over the air. Harnessing the development potential of a mobile phone can thus certainly be much more beneficial then merely providing another status symbol to the masses.” |
