Press under siege | Media in chains by Sadaf Arshad |
| |
The suggestion of the Commonwealth's human rights arm to suspend Pakistan from the 53-nation block arrives at a time when the chaos associated with the current political situation has refused to go away. The human rights body is finding it hard to justify the inclusion of Pakistan in that block after General Musharraf suspended the constitution and with them all the basic human rights. Undermining human rights makes it difficult for a country to exist in the human rights block. The situations should be tackled lightly. Pakistan's previous suspension from this block has set a record that can be beaten.

Code of conduct devised for gender-sensitive reporting |
| |
Journalists must focus on objective and proactive reporting of women’s rights issues without any preconceived gender biases and stereotypical jargons. Cases involving women and children are essentially social issue stories and should be addressed more sensitively and responsibly. While reporting crimes against women in the media, journalists should focus on the perpetrator of the crime instead of victimizing the victim through hard words and subjective connotations. These thoughts were shared by journalist and media trainer Shafqat Munir while addressing a group of NGO workers, mass communication students and journalists during a training workshop about women’s rights and gender-sensitive reporting, organized by ActionAid.
