New York Times reporter and photographer harassed and detained
The Committee to Protect Journalists called today for a full investigation into the detention of New York Times photographer Akhtar Soomro and the beating of reporter Carlotta Gall in Pakistan on December 19. Gall, who covers Pakistan and Afghanistan for the Times, told CPJ that men who said they were from the special branch of Pakistan’s police, detained Soomro, a Pakistani national, in his hotel around 8pm, and seized his computer and camera. Four men later broke into her room in a separate hotel, hit her and took away some of her belongings. Gall said she had bruises on her arms, temple, and cheekbone, swelling on her left eye and a sprained knee.

Pemra public hearing for licence award of satellite TV channel
Country's private channels, by and large, prefer up-linking their transmission by using Asia Sat-II and III instead of a relatively cheaper Pak-Sat due to lack of technical skills. It was observed during a public hearing arranged by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Friday to award a satellite television licence to Classic Entertainment (Pvt) Limited. As said by its CEO, Adnan Shaukat, the Classic Entertainment too, after obtaining the licence, would go for Asia Sat-II for up-linking transmission. He was of the opinion the Pak-Sat, though a cheaper option if compared with the Asia Sat, was technically too ineffective to be used for transmitting data.

  Priceless radio archives rendered useless
The Classical Music Research Cell (CMRC) of Radio Pakistan’s Lahore station, despite having priceless archives comprising recordings and portraits of legendary singers, has long been lacking funds and staff, seemingly because of laidback attitude of the authorities concerned, official sources say. The CRMC, now working under the Central Production Unit (CPU) of the organisation, once used to hold musical events and had an independent head as well. But, now it has nothing but books on music and recordings lying buried under thick layers of dust.
