  Media Protest
Gagging the media by Ardeshir Cowasjee
“He should realise that in this 21st century, with the electronic media being what it is, power vests not only in the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, but also in the media, though anyone reading the document that passes for our Constitution will find no reference to the institution of the press and the electronic media. As with the other three institutions, the media should be independent and strong as without it an effective check on those three cannot be ensured.”

Over the top by Masood Hasan
“On the sets of Hamid Mir's Capital Talk, the minister bored out of his wits, shifted his posterior and then in the great tradition of all Pakistanis who wrap their bodies in six yards and more of cloth, lifted his shirt and reached down into the nether regions. This public display of the minister's innate cultured upbringing and excellent behaviour would surely endear him even more to the country's president and the prime minister, who apparently think the world of their minister. That's good because we now all know what Mr Zafar thinks of everyone else who should be foolish enough to watch TV. When cautioned by the host about not disturbing his family marbles in public, the minister, bless him, retorted with the classic, 'It is my right.' Viewers may be forgiven if they are mistaken in thinking that it was actually his left although there are reports that on careful viewing it seems it was the whole shebang lot. Did I hear someone say 'No Ball?' No? Must be my ears.”

Letter to editor “Media under pressure”
Rashid Hussain, “One silent revolution has passed unnoticed: even in relatively conservative parts of NWFP and across urban and rural areas of the province, the Pushtu language channel AVT Khyber is watched with great interest. The channel has managed to take into account the sensitivities of the Pushtun culture in its programming, proving that the best regulation is self-regulation and target markets determine the content. The channel is by no means conservative but has the right content for its target audience. I am sure that other channels are fully capable of understanding their respective markets and can determine their programming accordingly, both entertainment and current affairs. Undue government interference would be an aberration in the earlier image of a government that had allowed considerable freedom to the media.”

Durrani for media code of conduct
Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani on Saturday stressed upon the media to share observance of certain code of conduct in order to secure issues of national interests. "The freedom enjoyed by media in the country had come to stay and there is no restriction on freedom of expression," he said while addressing a ceremony held here to award licenses to five new TV channels and landing rights to six others, at PEMRA headquarters. Information and Broadcasting Secretary Syed Anwar Mahmood and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Chairman Iftikhar Rashid were also present on the occasion. The minister said government is confronting the challenge of extremism and media's support in this regard was very much appreciative. "We want to formulate a joint strategy in collaboration with media to avoid projection of elements who are causing extremism and bringing bad name to the country," he added. He asked PBA, APNS and CPNE to formulate a code of conduct so that the projection of certain elements could be checked who wanted to exploit masses to attain their vested interests and ulterior. He particularly mentioned the illegal act of abduction of some persons belonging to a friendly country by the administration of Lal Masjid and said formulation of special media code would definitely discourage such incidents in future. Replying to a question, the minister said that representatives of Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) would meet the concerned government officials on Monday to present their proposals on electronic media code of conduct. "The government took pride in having pioneered the establishment of private TV channels and considers it a source of competition and accountability," he said.

No ordinary mortal by Adnan Rehmat
“Wasi has to his lasting fame the credit of discovering that media is not really the fourth pillar of the state. Perhaps it's the fifth. The fourth pillar is, of course, himself. When Wasi's gone from the corridors of power one day -- surely a dull day if there ever was one -- we will all miss the law of the long arm and have to contend instead with the long arm of law.”

Rain disrupts FM station’s broadcast
A local FM radio station was knocked off the air on Saturday in Karachi, falling victim to the season’s first proper monsoon shower. The Karachi transmission of City FM89, which has its offices located on one of the top floors of a Sharea Faisal high-rise, went offline following the showers that started late in the afternoon. A station representative confirmed that FM89’s local broadcast was experiencing “technical difficulties” as the station’s transmission tower had been affected by the inclement weather. However, she observed that only the local transmission had been disturbed and that the station was operating fine in other cities. The Karachi transmission was expected to be back online by “later tonight” (Saturday night) she added. The remaining eight FM stations in the city were broadcasting as normal
