Letter to the editor by HEERA SHAW, Samundri, via e-mail, July 17.
  Evaluating coverage
Nothing could be sadder for the nation than the unprecedented gory events we witnessed right after the massacre of Lal Masjid. The suicide bombing in the Frontier province and the explosions in Islamabad at the site of the CJP’s address in law courts have nauseated the public. The incessant firing by the government forces on the Lal Masjid during the mercilessly operation of 9 days was not shown on our TV screens, But the carnage at the CJP’s ‘jalsa’ was shown in full gory details for hours on all TV channels. This is because the Presidency desired it so. The most painful aspect of the TV coverage was that a private TV channel's anchor summarily declared it to be a ‘suicide bombing’ even though commentators on other channels were saying that a bomb had been planted in the electric transformer. It is pity that we are being forced-fed such views.

  CINEMA
Pakistani films in India
THE public exhibition of two brand new commercial films from India -- one released during the first week of this month and another ready for release from the first Friday of the next month -- is a very heart-warming event. This is surely going to boost the financials of our exhibition industry. But the question here is, do we want only our exhibition industry to flourish? No. Never. We surely want our entire cinema industry to prosper. For the revival and prosperity of our cine industry we need to produce our own films and release them outside Pakistan as well.
