A protest demonstration was held here on Thursday against the alleged stoppage of broadcast of Pushto programmes by the Pakistan Television, Peshawar centre. The protesters gathered at Kernel Sher Chowk, where poets and other literary figures criticised the shifting of the Pushto programmes to the PTV National channel. The speakers said successive governments had failed to accord the language its due status. Tila Mohammad Shabab, president of the Qalmi Tharun Swabi, said the PTV’s move had hurt the feelings of the Pukhtuns across the country. Another speaker, Karim Sattar, said people were unable to watch Pushto programmes because of poor reception of transmission PTV National. Swabi Bar Association general secretary Changez Khan said Pukhtun community had the right to have an equal status in the state machinery. The protesters threatened to launch a movement if the decision was not withdrawn in a fortnight. They handed over a memorandum to the district coordination officer, demanding that Pushto programmes should be telecast from the PTV, Peshawar centre. |

Music Dawn Editorial, “Taliban’s ban on music again” |
| |
“The local Taliban’s disdain for music — or any form of recreation for that matter — was shown on Monday when they banned music in Zargari and other areas near Hangu in NWFP. They also went one step forward and banned the sale of narcotics which would be commendable if the self-proclaimed morality police had any authority to legislate. The coming together of “leaders” to form shooras which then pass edicts like banning music or fining violators Rs50,000 for disobeying them is not recognised by the government — yet it continues and causes difficulties for people. It would be wrong to assume that everyone in the tribal areas adheres to rigid views like disallowing girls from going to school or prohibiting men from shaving their beards. The tragedy is that people do not have a choice but to follow the orders, as failure to do so can result in the Taliban unleashing their violence on the community.” |

Movies Letter to Editor “Not mere movies” |
| |
Mamoona Ali Kazmi, “A movie named 'Kaafla' starring Indian actor Sunny DeoI, whose name is synonymous with anti-Pakistan movies, is soon to be released in Pakistani cinemas. Releasing an Indian movie in Pakistan is not a new thing. My main concern is that how can we show the movie of a star renowned for his anti-Muslim and anti-Pakistan roles. Mr Deol has worked in a long list of anti-Pakistan movies including 'Border', 'Ghadr', 'Indian', 'Jo Bole So Nihaal', and 'Ma Tujhe Salam'. Watching an Indian actor with such an established record of hatred for Pakistan is an experience the Pakistani spectators could have been spared.”

Telecommunication Cyber crime bill to promote trade: Awais |
| |
Information Technology Minister Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said the adoption of cyber crime bill is a major step towards ensuring a secure business environment and promotion of e-commerce. He said the bill, which would be tabled in the parliament very soon, would help draw more business and improve Pakistan's e-readiness ranking as reflected in indices maintained by various agencies and business journals of the world. The minister was addressing a press conference a day after the federal cabinet approved the Prevention of Electronic Crime Bill 2007 Thursday. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been given the mandate to probe cases falling under the preview of the e-crime law. He said the e-crime law would require the internet companies maintain their traffic data for at least six months to enable the agencies to investigate cases involving data stored by them. |
