Govt may review blasphemy, other laws: minister |
| |
State Minster for Information Tariq Azeem has hinted that Pakistan’s minorities will receive “good news” this Christmas in the form of a “review” and possible amendments to laws that they consider discriminatory, such as the blasphemy law. Senator Azeem told Online on Saturday that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz may make an announcement about possible amendments to the blasphemy and other laws concerning minorities on December 25. He did not give further details. The minister rejected reports about the target killing of journalists in Pakistan in 2006, saying all the murders carried a personal motive.

Press freedom
FEDERAL Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani has simply repeated the official claim by saying that the present government has given unprecedented freedom to the media and wants to further promote it. Addressing a function at the Information Service Academy on Friday, he expressed his satisfaction over the media’s overall role but noted an element of irresponsibility in private television channels’ breaking-news phenomenon. Senator Durrani, however, raised some issues which require notice. The media needs no lectures on the ethics of journalism.
