Journalists show concern over threats to Pak newsmen |
| |
Representatives of the International Federation of Journalist (IFJ), National Union of Journalists, UK (NUJ), and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) raised serious concerns with the Interior Ministry over growing security threats and pressures on the Pakistani journalists. In the meeting with interior secretary Syed Kamal Shah, Brig. Javed Cheema joint secretary and other officials, the IFJ, NUJ UK and PFUJ representatives discussed in detail the working environment of the journalists which was worst, securities threats, growing trends of journalists murders, manhandling and threatening calls of the journalists.

Media criticism helpful for govt: Durrani |
| |
Information and Broadcasting Minister Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani Saturday said the government was benefiting from the criticism by free media to ensure transparency and good governance. The minister, flanked by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Senator Tariq Azeem Khan, was talking to a media delegation comprising Christopher Warren, president International Federation of Journalists (IFP), and Chris Morley, the president National Union of Journalists (NUJ), United Kingdom, President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ_ Pervaiz Shaukat, Secretary Afzal Butt, Najamus Saqib, Shehryar Khan, Tahir Khattak, Sunanda Deshapriya, Bharat Bhushan and Tahir Rathore.

Media delegation calls on Information Minister. Wage board award issue to be resolved within weeks. “The government is ready to provide protection to journalists if they want to travel to the tribal areas,” said Federal Information Minister Muhamamd Ali Durrani on Saturday. He said this while talking to a media delegation, consisting of International Federation of Journalists (IFP) President Christopher Warren, National Union of Journalists (NUJ) President Chris Morley and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists President Pervez Shaukat.

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) President Christopher Warren and UK’s National Union of Journalists (NUJ) Chief Chris Morley on Saturday expressed their concern over the growing incidents of violence against journalists in Pakistan. Speaking at a roundtable conference on “State of Press Freedom in Pakistan”, organised jointly by the IFJ and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), the two visiting mediapersons asked the Pakistani government to provide security to journalists against acts of intimidation and harassment.

FM stations have been given freedom for news bulletins. APNS lauds PEMRA bill adoption by NA |
| |
The Executive Committee of the APNS at its meeting held at Karachi under the chairmanship of its President Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman noted that the ban on government advertising by the government has negatively affected the government-press relations and reflected upon the track record of the government on press freedom. The Executive Committee considered the letter received from Daily Dawn wherein the publication had maintained that from December 22, 2006, the Federal Government has placed a ban on government advertisements in the publication. Since then, all pure government and government commercial advertisements released through PID, Islamabad or provincial PID offices have been stopped.

Balochistan to set up new TV channel |
| |
The Balochistan government has decided to set up a new television channel called the Balochistan Television Network in partnership with the public sector. The decision was taken in a meeting of the working committee under Chief Secretary K.B. Rind and comprising Secretary Finance Mahfooz Ali Khan, Secretary Information Israr Hussain, Secretary S&GAD Rana Naseer Ahmed and media consultant to the Chief Minister Raziq Bugti. The meeting was informed that the new TV channel was being set up to promote and introduce Balochistan’s cultural, social and economic activities internationally.

Pakistan Saudi media should come closer |

Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Islamabad Ali Awis Alasiri has expressed desire that Pakistan and Saudi media should come closer. He was addressing a function hosted by him for Saudi media delegation visiting Pakistan. He said soon an exhibition will be arranged for Pakistan products in Saudi Arabia. State Information Minister Tariq Azeem was also present on the occasion.
