Hopelessly poor in power by Nasim Zehra |
| |
“Increased pressure on the government may translate into increased pressure on the media. But any move to muzzle media freedom will backfire. The public including the professional classes and the political classes all recognise the media as the source of the 'complete picture' and of the facts of the many explosive issues that Pakistan's state, society and politics face. The power of a responsible media is here to stay. What needs to go is the poverty of wisdom within Pakistan's power circles.”

Govt curbing freedom of expression: HRCP |
| |
The notice served by PEMRA to a private TV channel on Monday, warning its up-linking may be cancelled, is only the latest in a series of measures aimed at preventing the free voicing of opinion within the media. This has been stated in a press statement released by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP). It also stated the action underscored the fact that the concerns already voiced by HRCP regarding the provisions of the draconian laws were well-founded. "The law is obviously aimed at limiting free expression and ensuring private media channels are not allowed to express dissenting views-despite many official claims to safeguarding media rights," it added.

“President Musharraf will likely remind everyone that he is the greatest champion of press freedom — even if there are plenty of incidents to show otherwise. To prove his true commitment, he must ensure that the media is allowed to do its job in an environment of freedom. Pemra, for its part, should ensure that every media organisation conforms to basic rules and regulations.”

View: Plagiarism — causes and consequences — Asghar Qadir |
| |
Plagiarism is the attempt to pass off work and ideas of others as one’s own. In Pakistan it is generally taken as a minor peccadillo, but in most of the developed world it is regarded as a serious offence. It is a more serious theft than that of material objects, despite the fact that it is more difficult to prove. Why is it difficult to prove? Because it is not clear where developing on someone else’s idea ends and stealing that idea begins. It is only when it is done brazenly that one can be sure of plagiarism.

Comment: More sinning than sinned against — Ijaz Hussain |
| |
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Punjab University (PU) administration are currently at loggerheads with each other. The conflict started when the HEC decided to suspend the PU’s funding following its failure to take strict action against five faculty members of the Centre for Higher Energy Physics (CHEP) who had earlier been found guilty of plagiarism. Rejecting the decision as “arbitrary” and “dictatorial”, the PU administration denounced the HEC Chairman on the ground that he “[was] not giving us money from his own pocket. It is public money and the PU students have a lawful right to it.” It threatened to take the issue to the Council of Common Interests. The HEC on its part has asked the PU Chancellor, Khalid Maqbool, to take suo moto action.
