Attempted murder of Ghamidi's magazine editor:
Cops say street crime, others disagree
Police officials investigating the attempted murder of Ishraq Editor Manzoorul Hassan have been trying to establish that the incident was a routine street crime, but sources have told Daily Times that this might have been part of a larger ploy to bring down proponents of moderate Islam like Hassan and Al-Mawrid Institute President Javed Ahmad Ghamidi.

Tribal areas remain out of Pemra ambit
FM radio channels operating in the federally and provincially administered tribal areas Fata and Pata do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) as the ordinance under which the authority was formed in 2002 has not been extended to the regions.

APNS to assess Balochistan situation
The publishers and editors of the country will visit Quetta to have on-the-spot appraisal of the situation in Balochistan and meet the high authorities of the province by the end of this month, said a press release of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS).

Media guide on British Muslims' instigates debate on UK foreign policy
British foreign policy cannot be dictated by terrorists. Instances of injustices need to be addressed and British government is doing just that. British Muslims-Media Guide, a book by UK-based writer and journalist Ehsan Masood, was launched by British Council here on Thursday at Islamabad Club. FM LISTENING: The supremacy of recorded programmes
Mostly when we tune into any FM channel we hear live programmes going on air. While listening to these shows one can hear RJs asking and motivating listeners to call in and share their views about the assigned topic or to make dedications or convey messages to their dear ones. Some times these shows sound good but some times dreadful.

Pemra amendment bill
The approval of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill by the Senate was done in as controversial a manner as the bill itself had been labelled after its passage by the National Assembly in May last year in the face of strong opposition to its various clauses. The bill outlived the mandatory 90 days in the Senate and was referred to the mediation committee of the two houses of parliament.

The government often says that the Press is enjoying freedom. This claim is far from reality. Recently the National Assembly Speaker, Chaudhry Amir Hussain has restricted private channels from entering Parliament and would only allow PTV to cover the Assembly proceedings.

Effects of Indian media

'Right to info law to strengthen democracy, curb corruption'
Speakers at a consultation meeting yesterday observed that ensuring the right to information would go a long way to strengthening democracy and curbing corruption through establishing transparency in the administration. They called on the people to forge a countrywide movement for immediate enactment of the Right to Information Act.
