Media Protest Media watchdog slams kidnapping of TV reporter |
| |
Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders has condemned the kidnapping and beating of ARY TV reporter Babar Malik on August 21 by men in plain-clothes using what appeared to be an intelligence agency jeep in Peshawar. In a press statement issued on Friday, the organisation said that Malik’s colleague had told them that before releasing him, Malik’s abductors told him: “You may be able to break big stories, but we can break your arms and legs.” Malik had just reported on the disappearance of Imran Munir, a man supposedly held by the military on spying charges. The Munir family denies the charges and says he is being held for having an affair with an officer’s wife. Malik has declined to talk about his abduction for fear of reprisals, but ARY TV has filed a complaint. |

Media Miscellaneous Lal Masjid resumes media activities |
| |
Lal Masjid has restored its media wing and sent emails on Saturday to newspapers and news agencies with the announcement “Lal Masjid website is back now”. “Dusk on 10 July, witnessed the fall of a gallant warrior (referring to the late Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi). Perhaps the bravest this land has seen. His revolutionary pride refused to bow down before a system, which is based on tyranny and oppression. He might be dead but he lives through the cause his blood sanctified,” was the message sent to media organisations. “To our nation, which, is enslaved for the past three hundred years, he gave the will to resist the ruling class and the imperial powers with the slogan Shariat Ya Shahadat,” it said. “We are back with a bang. Allah-u-akbar,” the message said. |

Television Letter to editor “Time on TV channels” |
| |
Nasser Yousaf, “apropos of the letter, ‘Time on TV channels’ (Aug 18), I would like to add that, besides time, there are many other crucial facts and figures which get compromised on all TV channels, including the Pakistan Television, with impunity. The TV channels continue to refer to various geographical and administrative zones as ‘divisions’, though the same have since long been abolished. Similarly, all TV channels while reporting from tribal areas of the North-West Frontier Province on a minute-to-minute basis seem to have no clue as regards the exact, or even near exact, location of the seven federally-administered tribal areas and the people residing therein. Will the channel-wallahs do the needful?”

Art Musharraf opens NAG today |
| |
Having faced many hiccups, the National Art Gallery (NAG) is finally set to be inaugurated today by President General Pervez Musharraf. The construction of the gallery was delayed for 16 years, and during this period it was just a structure, mostly roofless, gathered 12-foot deep waste and rainwater and truckloads of human filth. |

Advertising City diary | Gigantic billboards – a threat to human life |
| |
The high-rise buildings and roads of the federal capital are replete with huge billboards and hoardings. Various multinational companies and other advertising agencies have installed abnormal sizes of billboards and advertisement boards in the city. On seeing these billboards and hoardings in every nook and corner of the federal capital, one wonders as if Islamabad was fast becoming a city of billboards. "These billboards are causing obstructions to the drivers who cannot see the road behind these giant billboards. These huge installations may cause harm to human lives and property during strong windstorms. The sizes of these billboards are huge and of various sizes. It requires to be standardised and only those billboards, which fit the government standard of length, width and height, should be allowed," said Mohammad Ramzan, a businessman. |
