Bomb scare spreads panic at Press Club |

The journalists, covering the press conference by Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited’s 1,850 terminated employees at the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club, Sunday got flustered and rushed out of the place in no time after listening to a warning by a “suicide bomber.”As the press conference was in progress, a man, looking as if mentally distressed, suddenly got up, started reciting “Kalma Tayyeba” and pronounced to blow himself up after a while by blowing up the bomb he carried.

Bomb threat puts man in lock-up |
| |
A religious zealot scared journalists to death, and landed himself in police lock-up, by announcing at a press conference here on Sunday that he was going to blow himself up. “Recite Kalima and be prepared to die as I am strapped with explosives and going to blow myself up,” the man declared barging into the press conference at the Rawalpindi- Islamabad Press Club camp office at Melody. His words made the nearly 50 journalists and laid off workers of the Zarai Taraqqiati Bank (ZTBL) who were addressing the press conference to stampede. Several were injured in the melee and by the window glass they broke in the rush.

7 hurt in stampede after bomb scare |
| |
Seven people, including four journalists, were injured in a stampede on Sunday when a man entered the camp office of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club and threatened to detonate the explosive he said he was carrying. Former employees of the Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), who were addressing a press conference at the time, as well all those present in the press club, panicked and rushed towards the exit upon hearing the warning. In the ensuing stampede, four journalists and three others were injured.

10 injured during stampede in press club |
| |
At least 10 person including media men sustained minor injuries Sunday when they tried to storm out of the press club building here following the announcement of a man that he had bomb under his shirt. Hafiz Hussain has said that it was an attempt to harass media community. He has made demand for high level probe of the incident.

IFJ urges govt to protect media |

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on Sunday asked the Pakistani government to bring to justice those involved in the kidnapping and killing of journalists. Journalists facing safety, social rights crisis |
| |
Pakistani media is facing a crisis of safety and social rights, International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) President Christopher Warren said Sunday. Addressing a joint press conference with Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists President Pervez Shaukat, Warren said continued killing, kidnapping and harassment of journalists in Pakistan were intolerable that must be ceased.

Media faces safety, rights crisis in Pakistan: IFJ |
| |
The fact-finding mission of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has observed that media in Pakistan was facing a crisis of safety and social rights and expressed concern over the rising violence against journalists in the country. Speaking at a press conference, IFJ President Christopher Warren said the mission was concerned over potential threats to the operation of a free media through the government actions that had promoted cross-media ownership, placed police in positions to regulate media and failed to properly implement independent public service broadcasting.

IFJ wants wage award implemented |
| |
The head of a five-member “fact-finding mission on the state of press freedom in Pakistan” on Sunday called on newspaper owners to implement the Seventh Wage Board Award. “The social crisis in journalism flows from the failure of employers to implement their obligations under the Seventh Wage Award decision,” Christopher Warren, president of the International Federation of Journalists, told a news conference at the end of his four-day mission to Pakistan. “This demonstrates a fundamental lack of respect for the independence of journalists and for a free media,” he said.
