Journalist challenges Women's Protection Bill in SC

A freelance journalist on Friday filed a constitutional petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the recently introduced Women's Protection Bill 2006 and seeking stay order against any further debate on the bill in the National Assembly.

Journalists covering the National Assembly proceedings staged a walkout at the press gallery on Friday over the remarks of a state minister and a ruling party MNA against a woman reporter of an Urdu daily based in Layyah, and the murderous attack on the editor of a monthly in Lahore .

Pemra's decision to close Balakot FM slated

Association of Independent Radio (AIR) chairman Najeeb Ahmed has voiced serious concern over the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority's (Pemra) decision to close the Balakot based relief radio station Mast FM 103, while addressing a meeting with the heads of FM radio stations here Friday.

PTV joins PBA

Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) has joined the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) here on Friday. Addressing a meeting of the PBA Board of Directors, PTV Managing Director Mohammad Ashraf Azeem appreciated the efforts the association had successfully made to change the broadcasting environment, and added that the PBA network was an objective institution and it was a visible success.

Ideal location for press club in Capital promised

Promising an appropriate piece of land will be allotted at an ideal location in the federal capital for the establishment of International Press Club, Capital Development Authority chairman Kamran Lashari Friday gave ten days to the departments concerned for examining the suitability of the sites purposed by representatives of Islamabad and Rawalpindi Press Club, before apprising him about their advice.

Media urged to campaign for free information access

The national conference on "Right to Know" concluded on Wednesday with the notion that there should be an intensive and persuasive media campaign to ensure free access to information. The conference which was organised by the Mass Communication Department of the Federal Urdu University for Arts, Science and Technology, also resolved that "access to Information Ordinance" should be made comprehensive and all exceptions be eliminated from it.

CHINA : Chinese researcher for NY Times jailed three years for fraud

A Chinese researcher for The New York Times was acquitted on Friday on charges of revealing state secrets but was convicted of fraud and sentenced to three years in prison. Zhao Yan, 44, was detained in 2004. The government has not released details of the charges, but the case is believed to stem from a Times report on then-Chinese leader Jiang Zemin's plans to relinquish his post as head of the military.
