Attack on Media Intimidation Journalists decry occupation of Bara Press Club |
| |
Bara Press Club President Mehboob Shah Afridi has demanded NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Orakzai take legal action against the political administration of Tehsil Bara, Khyber Agency for razing the boundary wall of the old press club and destroying its furniture. Speaking at a news conference, Mehboob said the political administration on the orders the Fata Secretariat officials occupied the old press club, which was constructed on government land. Flanked by Mohammad Salim Afridi, general secretary of the press club, he alleged that the political administration knocked down the boundary wall of the press club and occupied it. "They ransacked the press club and threw furniture, computers, fax machine and other equipments out of the building," Mehboob said. He further said the row over the issue of the press club started a few months ago when the governor announced to construct a new press club. He added that journalists hailing from Bara had been struggling for a separate press club for them for the last 10 years. Accepting the demand of the journalists, the then governor, Khalilur Rehman issued special instructions for the construction of the press club in Bara. The political administration, Mehboob said, allotted a land sprawling over 20 to 25 Marlas for the construction of the press club while Rs200,000 were released by the federal information ministry. However, he said the incumbent governor announced to construct press clubs in each tribal agency including Khyber and allocated Rs 6 million for the Bara Press Club. He said the Bara journalists were insisting that the new press club to be constructed at old site. |

Letter to editor “raid on press club” |
| |
Aurangzeb Afridi, General Secretary, TUJ Bara, “The premises of the Bara Press Club were raided by the local political administration under orders from the political agent and the assistant political agent and all members of the club were denied entry into the building. The boundary wall and the doors of the press club were razed during the raid and the office equipment was thrown out and the record taken into possession. When the members and office-bearers of the club questioned the illegal action, the authorities misbehaved with them and threatened them. It is reported that previously a complaint had been lodged by the office-bearers against the political agent to the NWFP governor, who then called an explanation from the political agent of Khyber Agency. So the action against the Press Club is sheer vendetta on the part of the political agent. The Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) strongly condemns the illegal occupation of the Bara Press Club and demands that the governor take prompt action against the political agent. The governor is also requested to expedite the return of the press club premises to the members.” |

Media Protest Press under siege | Safety of journalists by Sadaf Arshad |
| |
“A number of journalists were injured, including Talat Anjum, a cameraman with APNA television channel, and Syed Athar Hussain, a photographer with the daily Jurrat. Rashid Ali Panhwar, a reporter associated with the Electronic News Gathering (ENG) service of the state-owned Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) also underwent surgery for the removal of six-inch shrapnel from his abdomen. The reason for the agony of these journalists is different from the rest of the people, as they have become the victims of their duty and responsibility. The journalists who were injured and the ones who have lost their life were duty-bound to cover the event. Suicide bombing is difficult to understand. No safety measures can be suggested precisely. It is always good to leave the place after the first blast has occurred because it is usually followed by a second blast. The second blast causes more damage. In this age of competition all media persons, especially TV persons, rush to the spot, which brings about such consequences. The other important issue to be discussed here is insurance of the journalists. It is the job of the media organisations that before sending them to a conflict zone, a media person should be insured and also provided with medical care and financial assistance. The job of covering conflicts, riots, and war is a dangerous business. I have failed to understand why media owners are always reluctant to spend money on the safety of their journalists. Such sad incidents remind us of the need to have our journalists trained, insured, and protected because the loss of lives is irreversible.”

Letter to editor “safe media” |
| |
Muhammad Farouk, “In today’s world, the media’s role has become vital to project the facts on the ground. In Pakistan, the media has become the first victim of suppression. Media persons have to suffer serious and fatal injuries resulting in the loss of precious lives of dedicated and experienced journalists. It is unfortunate for the media that it has to bear the loss of hardworking, committed, and professional media persons. Life of a media man is as expensive as a soldier doing his duty at the borders. The ministry of information should provide safety kits to media men, including bullet proof jackets, helmets, and other equipment. International standards should be kept in mind in this regard. The ministry should recommend strong suggestions to the interior ministry for future security plans after consulting with professional media persons. These suggestions should be part of a code of conduct for future rallies for the forthcoming general elections. Media owners should introduce life insurance for journalists. The insurance plans should include shelter, health, and education cover for the family of the victims.

Television Letter to Editor “Television hosts” |
| |
Tooba Alam, “I fail to understand why anchorpersons of television talk shows take sides in political discussions. As professionals, they should keep themselves from becoming a party in the debate. They openly criticise and reprimand government representatives without realising that ideally they should let their guests from the government and opposition speak their minds. In fact, some of the hosts are known for their utter disregard of decorum and show disrespectful behaviour towards their guests.”
