Police rough up journalists |

The capital police on Friday created an ugly scene at the site of the suicide blast when it started beating dozens of local and foreign journalists who gathered at the site of the explosion for the coverage of the incident. More than ten media persons, including staff reporter of TheNation, Fazal Sher, photographers Sajjad Ali Qureshi and Syed Mehdi sustained injuries as a result of brutal and unwarranted police brutality in presence of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad and Senior Superintendent Police (SSP). Journalists protested over the brutal attitude of the capital police and chanted slogans against the government for beating media persons.

| |
The Islamabad police swung batons at journalists covering the scene of a suicide attack outside a local five-star hotel here on Friday, injuring more than 25 journalists. Cameramen and photographers from various television channels and newspapers were busy covering the incident when Additional SP Dr Moeen Masood stopped them. Dr Moeen ordered his force to baton charge the journalists when they told him that they were only doing their professional duty. Interior Secretary Kamal Shah told journalists that a judicial inquiry into the incident had been ordered and a report would be submitted to the interior minister within 24 hours.

Police baton-charge journalists, injure several |
| |
suicide bomber blew himself up at the Marriott, a five star hotel located in the highly sensitive area, Friday following a scuffle with a security guard, who was also killed in the blast. After the blast, the police cordoned off the area to collect body parts, belongings of the bomber for investigation. But the reporters especially from the electronic media tried to reach the site of the blast to telecast glimpses of the bodies. Despite repeated warning to stay away from the place, the journalists continued with their efforts. This prompted the policemen to resort to baton-charge, which injured some six media persons.

Application for FIR against Police for baton-charge on journalists |
| |
An application has been submitted in Police Station Secretariat to lodge FIR against Police officials involved in baton charge against journalists. SSP Islamabad received the application. He assured that judicial probe had been ordered for incident. FIR will be registered in light of probe report.

Arif Nizami condemns incident of Police baton charge |
| |
Arif Nizami has condemned the police brutality against journalists. He said that it was against the code of conduct of freedom of press. He asked government to take immediate notice and action against the officials responsible for incident.

On report of alleged use of force by the local law enforcement agencies against the journalists a judicial inquiry has been ordered by the chief commissioner to fix responsibility within 24 hours as to who were responsible for use of force against the journalists. In this context the additional deputy commissioner, ICT has been appointed as inquiry officer.

Journalists to protest till Sohail’s release |
| |
Though the government claimed that it accelerated efforts for safe recovery of missing resident editor of the daily Express, Sohail Qalandar and his friend Muhammad Niaz, the journalists, dissatisfied over the administration’s endeavours hold another protest demonstration here Friday.

Protest against journalist’s kidnapping |
| |
The journalist community of the NWFP on Friday held demonstrations in protest against police failure to recover Sohail Qalander, resident editor of daily Express. The joint action committee of the Khyber Union of Journalists and the Peshawar Press Club organized the procession in the city. Journalists expressed anger over delay in the recovery. The protestors carried placards and banners inscribed with slogans demanding immediate recovery of the kidnapped senior journalist.

| |
NWFP Governor Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai said on Friday that the law enforcement agencies were making efforts for safe recovery of Sohail Qalander. He was talking to a delegation of Joint Action Committee working for recovery of journalist.
