  Syed Anwar Mehmood has been reappointed as federal information secretary to enhance the existing ties with the media. He has successfully served the country in this position for several times in the past.

  MMA slates vulgar TV ads
  The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) on Monday, expressing concern over the vulgar advertisements being produced and telecast in the country, has urged the authorities to check this growing menace that is affecting the morals of society. In a statement issued here, MMA leaders Mohammad Hussain Mehnati (MNA) and Laiq Khan (MNA) said that various cell phone companies’ advertisements full of vulgarity and against the family values and morals of society, were being telecast through numerous TV channels. They demanded that the government should ask Pemra to implement its rules.

  Jamia Hafsa students start drive against video centres
  Girl students of Jamia Hafsa launched a campaign against video centres in the federal capital on Monday. “Students of Jamia Hafsa and Lal Masjid have started making rounds of various markets of the city, including the Melody Market, as part of their drive against video shops. We tried to convince the shopkeepers to leave this business and all of them have promised to quit,” said a statement by the seminary.

  Foreign office asks media to avoid speculation
  Pakistan's foreign ministry on Monday asked the international media to avoid "speculation and rumours" about the murder of cricket coach Bob Woolmer at the World Cup. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said rumours swirling around Woolmer's death were increasing the trauma faced by the team. Her comments came after Mark Shields, the Jamaica police chief probing Woolmer's strangling at his hotel, said in an interview that he had let the team fly home from Jamaica to avoid a diplomatic row. "There are lot of speculations and rumours, some of them very malicious. And we expect the media, international media particularly, to show some sensitivity," Aslam said. "Our players are already traumatised.

  Cinema houses display religious posters not movie teasers
  one sign of an upcoming religious occasion in the city is when movie posters around major cinema houses are covered with huge sheets of black cloth topped with “religious banners”. This year is no different even though the banners are up earlier than usual.

  Pakistani film wins award at international festival
  Pakistani film maker Jamil Dehlvi’s “infinite justice” won best feature film award at the European Independent Film festival in Paris on March18. The film was shown in Karachi in Kara Film festival. It is loosely based on the Daniel Pearl story.

  Judicial crisis and media’s role
  Dr Tariq Rahman comments “The attack on Geo TV is a significant event in the history of the media in Pakistan. Not only was it shown in full detail repeatedly by the channel itself, it was also covered by every other respectable private channel in the country.The print media also came out with editorials, columns and letters to the editor in support of the freedom of the media.”

  Young artists should be acknowledged
  Gulmohar Art Gallery wants to promote budding artists of the country across the world, said its proprietor, Shaheen Siddiqui. She said the gallery had served as a platform for young artists and encouraged them without keeping the financial benefits in mind. The gallery opened its doors three years ago, has held 21 exhibitions to date in which creations of seasoned as well as novices were displayed. She said they plan to take it a step further and make the work of these new comers known throughout the world.

  Press club housing: Announcement for first installment
  Press Club Rawalpindi Islamabad held its governing body meeting. President Press club Mustaq Minhas chaired the governing body meeting. He informed the meeting that after consultation with authorities now journalists housing colony members can pay first installment of Rs 30,000 in spite Rs 87750 through bank daft from April 01-15. Schedule and amount for 2nd installment will be announced later. He informed that Prime Minister has given approval for land allocation for press club in Islamabad. A plot of six canals is located in front of Super Market Islamabad. Meeting expressed gratitude to PM Shukat Aziz, Information Minister Muhammad Ali Khan Durrani, Ex Secretary Information Shahid Rafi, Secretary Interior and Chairman CDA for land allotment.

  Durrani Media Colony construction ordered
  NWFP Minister for Information Asif Iqbal Daudzai has directed the relevant authorities to make all necessary arrangements for the construction of the proposed Durrani Media Colony, issuing orders that land acquisition and development work be started immediately. Addressing the first meeting of the committee constituted for the construction of the proposed media colony, the provincial minister said the committee had started work on site selection and land acquisition for the colony which would be finalized soon. The provincial government, according to the directives of the chief minister, is committed to providing residential facilities to journalists, he added.

  Gandhara Week begins
  The Tourism Ministry’s annul event the Gandhara Week, started on Monday as part of Visit Pakistan 2007 festivities. Gandhara Week, being celebrated every March for the last couple of years, aims at promoting Pakistan's archaeological heritage, particularly the Gandhara Heritage among Buddhist tourists.

  Well-known Artist Jamal Shah has demanded that name of National Council of Arts should not be changed. All artists should be given fair representation in inauguration ceremony of art gallery in Islamabad. He asked government that Film Theater in Islamabad should be completed on urgent basis.
