Musharraf for absolute freedom of press
President General Pervez Musharraf Friday renewed his firm commitment to the freedom of press and declared that the government would facilitate access to information. “I am for total freedom of the media, which is the fourth pillar of the state and is the first line of defence in today's world,” he stated in a wide-ranging address at the 18th Awards Ceremony of All Pakistan Newspapers Society.

Taking photographs of violence survivors without permission 'unethical'
The condition of women becomes quite vulnerable in crisis situations. It worsens when they are exposed to media, which publishes their stories and makes known the plight they don't want to reveal in public. For media, violence is a public sphere issue and requires to be highlighted. But the majority of survivors want it to remain private and confidential as they face un-surmountable obstacles after reporting assault.

Da Vinci Code unites Muslims and Christians in protest
The controversy kicked up by the film The Da Vinci Code is so intense that it has brought people of different faiths together in Pakistan . In Karachi , the Jamaat-e-Islami and various Christian groups have taken up the cause of having the movie banned internationally and a code be adopted against insulting religious personages.

Two decades of Mahathir's rule mean that the media are now under direct or indirect governmental control, and as a former prime minister, he does not have the same access as before. Mahathir is now forced to make his case on the Internet, of all places. What goes around comes around: The narrative of the lives of politicians are often the same, sharing structural features that read like a predictable storybook. More often than not they come to power promising a wave of reforms, but soon enough discover — as if by shock — that democracy is more complicated when one has to work within its parameters and that a healthy opposition can also be a stumbling block to one's ambitions.
