Media Protest Threats against journalists condemned |
| |
The Sindh Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) meeting under the Chairmanship of the Convener Kazi Asad Abid this afternoon strongly deplored the press release purported to have been released by the Muhajir Rabita Council and which contains direct threats to media persons. The meeting called upon Federal Minister for Housing & Works Mr. Safwanullah to ensure that his name is not used in such activities of the Muhajir Rabita Council, which is seeking to inflame the situation in the city of Karachi and is engaged in wild allegations. The CPNE Sindh Editors meeting declared vehemently that the Muhajir Rabita Council must also ensure that its name is not used for activities that are directed at violence against the Fourth State. The CPNE Sindh Committee meeting also drew attention of the leadership of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement to take full cognizance of the threats given to the Media persons in the name of Muhajir Rabita Council specially when the Sindh Government led by Governor Ishratul Ebad Khan and Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim are campaigning for bringing back normalcy and peace to Karachi city and Sindh province. The CPNE members felt that the Muhajir Rabita Council’s statement containing the most deplorable allegations against the print and electronic media personnel was most regrettable and the Muttahida leadership must publicly distance itself away from the allegations leveled by the Muhajir Rabita Council against Media persons. The meeting felt that the current situation in Karachi and Sindh called for making full amends for the lapses of May 12, 2007 and taking of measures whereby such incidents are not repeated.

CPJ condemns threats to journalists |
| |
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has deplored what it calls “a spate of threatening announcements and phone calls directed at journalists in Pakistan”. A statement released this week by the Muhajir Rabita Council closely associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the party CPJ said is allied to President Pervez Musharraf listed 12 journalists by name and identified them as “enemies”. Syed Huma Ali, president of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, CPJ noted, had also received threatening phone calls from an unnamed caller as he was preparing to board a plane for a meeting of the International Federation of Journalists in Moscow. “Threats against journalists are mounting in Pakistan and the government must take immediate steps to not only protect journalists, but to actively seek out and bring to justice those that would harm them,” said Bob Dietz, CPJ’s Asia programme coordinator. He told the Voice of America in an interview that the government should ensure that Pakistani journalists have protection. “It is the government’s duty to take notice of such threats, no matter where they emanate from,” he added.

Dawn Editorial “Crisis unending” |
| |
“The media is a mirror that reflects the face of reality. The president’s criticism of the electronic media maybe justified to a degree, because the dozens of channels we have will take time to come of age and show maturity. But let us not forget that some of the world’s most prestigious channels do not hesitate to show gory scenes — often with apologies to their viewers.”

Militants threaten music shops in DIK |
| |
Pro-Taliban militants have warned music and video shops as well as clandestine hashish and alcohol outlets in a Frontier town to close down, local residents said on Saturday. The threat came in pamphlets distributed in Darra Adam Khel town, some 25 kilometres from Peshawar, the main town in North West Frontier Province bordering Afghanistan. At least 10 music shops in the region have suffered grenade attacks by militants over the past eight months. The latest threats also warned shopkeepers to stop downloading songs as mobile telephone ring tones. “The Taliban have set July 1 as a deadline to abandon all un-Islamic business in the area,” local resident Murtza Khan said.“All music shops in this area are closing now,” shopkeeper Jan Alam said. Similar threats have been made periodically in other tribal territories where militants, emulating the ultra-orthodox Taliban who ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, strive to impose their own brand of Islam.

Art Caged culture by Bilal Tanweer |
| |
“The Lok Virsa museum in Islamabad has no heritage to boast about, only replicas to offer.” The museums in Pakistan are legendary for their shabbiness. So it should come as no surprise when I say that Lok Virsa Museum in Islamabad is another one of such. But I must say with greater force and emphasis, it is not just bad, it is awful. I must go on to say, it is not a museum at all, but something else.”
