New CTO says fine collection through credit, prepaid cards to be launched soon
The City Traffic Police is planning to introduce an hourly traffic situation update service on FM transmission, newly appointed Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ghulam Mohammad Dogar told a press conference at the SSP’s office on Wednesday. Dogar said the bulletin would cover the situation of traffic on the city’s main roads and their sub arteries. He said the service would also recommend alternate routes in case there was a traffic jam on a road. Dogar said the traffic police department was also planning on introducing a new fine collection system through credit cards, prepaid cards and courier services. He said the old fine-collection system was outdated and was helping road-corruption. He said the new options that the traffic police were planning to start were: payment through credit cards, prepaid cards that would be available in the market and paying the fine in allocated banks (the existent way of paying traffic fines). In the last option, the violator would receive his/her confiscated documents through courier.

| |
Film producer and distributor Mohammad Sohail Khan expressed hope that the success of his latest film, Awarapan, will help the revival of cinema in Pakistan. A question and answer session was held for journalists, who were invited to attend a press show of the film at Nishat Cinema.
Sohail Khan is on tour to promote his film in Pakistan. He came to Karachi after visiting Lahore, where he revealed that 18 cinemas of the country are screening the film and so far, he has received positive responses from all quarters. In response to a question, he said that he is a Pakistani and has a right to market any product that he makes or launches — regardless of the country of production — in Pakistan.
He said that he did not think Awarapan is an “Indian” film since the co-producer of the movie is a Pakistani and it also has Pakistani singers.

Art Opening of art gallery eagerly awaited |
| |
The inauguration of National Art Gallery has become as inconsequential as its construction was 16 years ago. Lost in a maze of half truths and unfulfilled promises, artistes and current curators associated with the gallery are more frustrated today then they were when truckloads of waste, slush and human filth accumulated at the site while the project gathered dust because art was never a priority with successive government.

Installation procedures of hoardings discussed |
| |
A meeting to streamline the installation procedures of hoardings and billboards was held at Station Headquarters, Karachi, on Thursday. During the course of the meeting, the viabi1ity of the existing hoardings was discussed and it was decided that all structures will be removed by August 10, 2007, as their condition is doubtful after the recent storms. The participants of the meeting also deliberated on the criteria for the installation of hoardings and decided that no hoarding will be allowed on residential and commercial buildings. Only three categories of l0ft x 20ft, 15ft x 45ft and 20ft x 60ft will be allowed with maximum height of the hoarding from the ground, not more than 35 to 40ft. It was also decided that the Pakistan Engineering Council will certify all such structures and its certificate to this effect will be deposited by the advertiser along with the stakeholder. According to another decision, an expert will examine the gauge and strength of the sheet. Also, the minimum distance between two hoardings should not be less than 50 metres. The hoardings will be comprehensively insured to make up the loss of aggrieved parties in case of accidents. The Chief Executive Officers of cantonment boards, representatives of Commander Karachi (Comkar), the City District Government Karachi (CDGK), and officers for Corps Headquarters and Station Headquarters attended the meeting.
