Attack on Media Intimidation Militants detain journalist for four hours |
| |
The supporters of pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Fazlullah on Friday took hostage a senior reporter of a TV channel for four hours in Swat. Niaz Ahmed Khan, reporter for Khyber News, Pakistan’s only Pushto-language TV channel, was taken hostage at Imam Dheri, headquarters of the mullah. “My reporter was released after I contacted the top leaders of militants. I told them that Niaz is a professional journalist and not an undercover agent,” Khyber News senior producer Shaheen Buneri told Daily Times on phone from Mingora city. Niaz was taken hostage because the militants suspected him as an “undercover agent”, although he had showed them his press card, Buneri said. “He remained in the militants’ custody for four hours,” he added. |

TV production course launched for students |
| |
The Royal Embassy of the Netherlands launched an eight-week television production course for students from South Asia at the South Asian Media School in Lahore on Friday, says a press release. The Netherlands government has signed a Rs40 million agreement with the South Asia Free Media Association (Safma). This contribution has come about in close cooperation with the Norwegian embassy. The course is a part of the agreement. The course brings together television journalists from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Issues like ‘Peace and Media,’ ‘Fundamental Human Rights,’ ‘Empowerment of Women through Media’ and ‘Democracy and Electronic Media in South Asia’ will be discussed in the course. The partnership with Safma dates back to 2004, when the Netherlands and Norway embarked on a first round of cooperation with Safma, then the focus of Safma’s activities was on Pakistan-India relations, and it is exactly in that field that Safma has been able to deliver ground-breaking results. Safma is one of the relevant actors in bringing groups of people together in order to break to existing mutual perceptions. Its free media endeavours and its efforts in peacemaking and confidence building, first and foremost as power broker in the India-Pakistan relationship is unprecedented within the international family of press freedom campaigners. Safma is working on a regional agenda which is incomplete. Safma still has an important role to play and many challenges remain.

Copyrights HEC formulates new policy on plagiarism |
| |
To check Plagiarism, which is an intellectual crime, Higher Education Commission has formulated a Plagiarism Policy and sent it to all the four Chancellors of the Provinces for immediate implementation in the universities under their control. Plagiarism has been rampant among the faculty as well as students in the universities for several decades but no action was taken in the past to check this menace. The Higher Education Commission decided that this menace must be curbed through exemplary preventive and punitive actions. The aim of the Plagiarism policy is to apprise the students, teachers, researchers and staff about plagiarism and how it can be avoided. This policy is applicable to students, teachers, researchers and staff of all institutions and organisations in Pakistan who are involved in writing or publishing their work. A “Plagiarism Standing Committee”, will be formed in each university to review the cases of plagiarism, which will consist of 3 senior faculty member, a subject specialist, a nominee of the HEC and a senior student (only if a student is being investigated upon).

International music investors tuning in |
| |
The International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and Motion Picture Association (MPA) have appreciated the government’s efforts in curbing music and film piracy and assured that big international companies would soon start investing in Pakistan. Director IFPI, Stefan Krawczyk addressing a press conference here Friday said the international companies were reluctant to invest in the past owing to weak enforcement of copyright law, fearing their investments would not pay back. The present government has shown strong political will and understanding to check piracy, he said. It has already closed down at least half a dozen illegal optical discs (CDs and DVDs) production plants, which were affecting both domestic and international repertoire.
IFPI represents the recording industry worldwide with over 1,450 members in more than 75 countries and affiliated industry associations in 48 countries, he said.
