  Extremism threatens Pushto folk music

Prominent folk singers have either left their birthplaces for other towns or given up performing on weddings and other festive occasions, fearing that this may invite reprisals from extremists.

Editorial the Nation “The state of media”
The government decision to re-appoint Syed Anwar Mehmood as Federal Information Secretary apparently suggests that his predecessor had not handled the affairs of the Ministry in a manner considered suitable by the leadership and it was felt desirable to bring back a tried and tested person. But the powers that be must not overlook a fairly obvious change in the ground reality since Mr Mehmood last held the charge, that is the sharp fall in their popularity rating with the general public owing to the pursuit of policies that are neither transparent nor popular. An official information establishment can at best put a little bit of gloss over some wrongly conceived government’s programmes but cannot completely hide the ugly facts.

View: Cinema's bid for survival —Alefia T Hussain
Tomorrow, Thursday March 29, may be a make or break day for the film industry. Islamabad may get the message at last: lift the ban on local screening of Indian box office flicks or witness the slow and lingering death of our films and creative potentials.

  Nawa-i-Waqt report on film industry
Saif ullah Sipra reports cinema strikes. Cinema Houses are on strike, ask government to allow screening of Indian movies to attract folk back to big scene. Cinema owners have threatened to shut cinema after April 15 id demands are not respected. Government should pay attention to issue.

Letter to editor “Pakistan film industry”
For the lack of government support, hundreds of cinema houses have closed down over the years. Those that exist are barely surviving, whereas newly opened multiplexes are only doing well because they are showing foreign films. Over the last few years there has been a huge demand from film producers, actors and cinema owners to allow the screening of Indian films. This, they argue, will actually benefit the local industry rather than harm it.

Puppet theatre in a state of neglect
The puppet theatre at Alhamra Art Center, set up in 1984 to entertain children, is in appalling condition due to lack of interest on the part of Alhamra administration. The seating arrangement is worn out while the sound system often remains out of order. Samina said Alhamra authorities were showing no interest in the theatre. “They are not recording new stories, nor crafting new puppets.”

Art gallery wins back name but not support
National art gallery’s name is back on the portal of the building but at third place after Pakistan National Council of the Arts and Pakistan Centre for Creative Arts. Sleema Hashmi commented, “its absolutely nuts , earlier when the name NAG was dropped, it hurt many visual artists but recent act just adds insult to injury.”

Letter to editor “Art gallery row”
I was extremely disappointed to read your March 25 editorial advocating a diluted role for the National Art Gallery. The mediation language of 'sharing formula' and stakeholder satisfaction is oddly applied to a project rigorously designed to do justice to Pakistan's distinguished achievement in the visual arts over the last sixty years.

Editorial Dawn “Poor upkeep of libraries”
While freedom of expression and the right to knowledge demand that the people be given access to several avenues of information, there is also a need to provide reading material so that the mind can assimilate, understand and analyse through the written word. Scholarship, and consequently excellence, in any field cannot be achieved without strong reading habits, and the government must help in cultivating these by looking after public libraries, providing them with sufficient funds and encouraging their use.

Letter to editor “Tribute to Ahmad Ali Khan”
The passing away of Khan Saab was sad for us. The hallmark of his style was honesty, mellowed with wisdom but never compromised with stratagem — a fine distinction, well understood by him. It won Dawn a reputation which is the envy of South Asian newspapers.
