  Assault
House of journalist attacked
Unidentified men on Saturday night attacked the house of a journalist with grenades, causing damage to some portions of the house. Nasrullah Afridi, who works for daily Mashriq as its Khyber Agency correspondent, told Dawn the assailants threw two grenades into his home at 8.30pm, but his family members escaped injuries as they were inside a room at the time of the blast. He said the bombs damaged the boundary wall and veranda of the house. Mr Nasrullah had moved to Hayatabad locality in Peshawar in June 2006 after receiving threats from militants of Lashkar-i-Islam operating in the Bara tehsil of the Khyber Agency. In his FIR, Mr Nasrullah blamed militants of Lashkar-i-Islam for the attack, saying that the group had threatened to kill him in the May 21 broadcast of its illegal FM radio station. The Lashkar men had accused Nasrullah of giving what they called undue coverage to their opponents. Nasrullah denied these charges. The Tribal Union of Journalists on Saturday announced a protest campaign in all seven tribal agencies

Policeman flashes ‘weapon’ at media
A group of print and electronic media personnel had reached the PTI office to cover the press conference called by party provincial president Zubari Khan. A large number of policemen armed with tear gas guns were sitting outside the office. When a cameraman started to get footage of the scene a police officer unzipped and stood naked in front of camera to ‘register his anger against media,” while his colleagues laughed at the spectacle. When the cameraman complained to the officer on duty he was told that flashing police constable was ‘mad, and has come from the police headquarters.”

CPJ condemns list of ‘enemy’ journalists
Twelve journalists have been declared "enemies" by an organization linked to a party that supports President Musharraf, a media rights group said. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said in a statement on Saturday that the Karachi-based Muhajir Rabita Council has "listed 12 journalists by name and identified them as 'enemies.'" The CJP did not say why the designations were made, but they seem to be linked with coverage of violence in Karachi on May 12 in which some 41 people were killed and dozens wounded, many from gunfire. Minister of State for Information Senator Tariq Azeem Khan said he was unaware of any such list. The CPJ said the council is closely associated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement, an ethnic-based party that is centred in Karachi and strongly backs Musharraf. A Muttahida lawmaker denied the group was involved in threatening journalists. "Threatening anyone is not our policy," said Haider Rizvi, an MQM MNA. Members of the Muhajir Rabita Council could not be reached for comment.

  TUJ condemns attack on journalist
The Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) staged a demonstration on Sunday to condemn the attack on the house of a tribal journalist and demanded the government immediately arrest the culprits. The demonstration led by TUJ President Nasir Khan Mohmand took place in front of the Peshawar Press Club. The protesting tribal journalists chanted slogans against the government for failing to protect Nasrullah Afridi despite his request for help. They accused a Khyber Agency-based religious group of giving life threats to Nasrullah. Mohmand said the government had failed to protect tribal journalists even if they were in the provincial capital, and demanded the Mutahidda Majlis-e-Amal government take steps for the security of tribal journalists in the settled areas.

Dawn Editorial, “What is ‘positive’ journalism?”
“holding the print and electronic media responsible for projecting Pakistan in a negative light, President Pervez Musharraf has criticised the press and TV for not reporting the “government’s achievements in the fields of economy, education, telecommunication and even human rights”. His objections sound strange, especially because in the same breath, the president was aglow over the freedom his government has given to the media.” “Unfortunately, the country is going through difficult times and the media should not be expected to distort or suppress facts to paint a rosy picture of things.”

PTI gives 72 hours for removing graffiti
The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf on Sunday gave the Muttahida Qaumi Movement 72 hours to remove all graffiti against its leader Imran Khan from across the province, warning that activists of the party would otherwise burn MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s effigies elsewhere in the province and would also adopt other ways of public protest. He said wall-chalking and threats resorted to by the MQM was nothing but an attempt to cover up the growing resentment among masses against the MQM for its role in the May 12 mayhem.

  Media revolution by Nadeem Syed
The impact of these TV channels is manifested in many ways. For me, the most important is its civilising influence on the society. There are many examples. I will like to quote some recent ones. Remember the violence that took place on May 12, killing 40 people. All the leading TVs depicted what happened on the day. The people gave its verdict the very next day: complete shutter down across the country. The public disgust was more than evident from what they saw on their screens. Public reaction was strong enough to pre-empt any such happening in future. A word for these channels. As their number grows, they are likely to face issues like maintaining their credibility in the eyes of their viewers. They are also being influenced by different stakeholders. The challenge for media is how to maintain its quality and credibility in face of all these odds.

Letter to editor “A free media”
Fawad Zakariya comments “Media freedom is a true force for good when it provides honest checks and balances against government excesses. Perhaps General Musharraf should be reminded of Lord Northcliffe's insightful dictum: "News is what somebody somewhere wants to suppress; all the rest is advertising."

  Television
Begum Nawazish Ali! By Aftab Iqbal
The Nation columnist Aftab Iqbal comments ,“Besides a lot of other freaky stuff, the mushroom growth of TV channels has brought forth an army of "Minglish" speaking eunuchs mostly affiliated with fashion and showbiz. Like several social butterflies in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, these "guys" have a limited but well rehashed stock of English language. They begin most of their conversations with an Americanized accent that is "consumed" in less than a minute. That's where they mingle it with a quaint blend of Urdu and Punjabi. I am not at all surprised at the audacity and shamelessness of the producer and host of the show, however, the morons who visit Begum Nawazish Ali as guests, do surprise me a lot.”
