Kara Film Festival opens on December 7
The 6th KaraFilm Festival will begin in the city on December 7 through 17 during which more than 170 films from 37 countries will be screened. Besides, for the very first time in KaraFilm's five years, cash awards will be given to the films adjudged the best. A large number of foreign delegates and film makers are expected to attend the festival that will cost approximately Rs20 million. They include Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan, Jamil Dehlavi, Jafar Panahi (Iran), Mahesh Bhatt and others. Director Festival Hasan Zaidi announced this while addressing a press conference at Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) on Monday.

Journalist's murder still unsolved
An investigation team formed by Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah to probe the murder of a senior journalist, Malik Ismail, has not found any clue to the identity of the murderers yet. Superintendent of Police (investigation) Ashfaq Ahmed Khan, who is part of the team, told Daily Times on Monday that “well-reputed” investigators were examining all aspects of the murder, but had failed to find any solid evidence so far.

Media training workshop on mother and newborn healthcare begins today
The third four-day media training to improve coverage and public knowledge about home and hospital-based mother and newborn health care issues is going to be kicked off here today (Tuesday) to train journalists from NWFP on how to report these issues sensitizing their importance. Third of a series of high quality training workshops for print, radio and television journalists, the four-day workshop is being held by Intermedia in collaboration with Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborn (PIMAN), a project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)….

Speakers at Monday's workshop on Investigative Reporting on Elections highlighted the role of the press and media in strengthening democracy and holding of free, fair and transparent elections. Zafar Ali Khan's death anniversary observed
The 50th death anniversary of Maulana Zafar Ali Khan was observed across the country on Monday. A number of functions including different seminars and references were held in order to pay tribute to Maulana Zafar Ali Khan (1873-1956), journalist, writer, poet and freedom fighter. Maulana Zafar Ali Khan was the pre-eminent Urdu journalist of pre-partition India being the editor of the newspaper Zamindar which prominently projected Muslim aspirations.

Investigative journalism course at NUML
A one-year postgraduate course in investigative journalism has been introduced in the department of mass communication at the National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad. The course is being arranged in collaboration with print and electronic media organisations in Pakistan. The faculty will consist of leading journalists in investigative journalism.

PAL launches special Qasmi number
The Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) has launched its special issue of quarterly literary magazine ‘Adabiyat' about Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi who passed away on July 10th this year. Adabiyat is a huge document containing critical essays, personal recollections and homage to the great Urdu writer who left an indelible mark on the horizon of contemporary literature. He was not an individual but a movement who symbolised a peculiar kind of literature till his death.
