  CPJ concerned over media curbs
  The Committee to Protect Journalists has expressed concern over the deteriorating media environment in Pakistan, including business retaliation and outright attacks on media companies. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the media watchdog group noted that “Pakistan’s largest independent English-language media group, the Dawn Group of Newspapers, distributed a letter on Friday from Publisher Hamid Haroon, who said President Pervez Musharraf has become increasingly intolerant towards criticism in the press and towards the publishing of news that reflects poorly on the performance of his government on security matters.”

  Illegal FM channel in Islamabad
  An illegal FM channel is being operated on regular basis in the heart of the federal capital. The transmission of the channel can be heard in between the frequencies of 92 and 93 from 6 AM to 8 AM daily.

  Ulema had a facility to use frequencies of FM radio
  Moves to impose Talibanisation in capital. According to a security official, the ulema were trying to expand their operations in the city in the name of Jihad. Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Chaudhry Mohammad Ali said the ulema had a facility to use frequencies of FM radio and on Wednesday they blocked four frequencies -- FM 92 to 96 – to launch their propaganda through radio for an hour in the morning.The students of Madressah Hafsa, who had been occupying the government’s library for children for the past two months, had raided the house, picked the owner Shahmim, her daughter Sadaf and daughter-in-law Nadia Batool, and detained them in Lal Masjid.

  Police give in to Jamia Hafsa students
  The administration of Lal Masjid which consists of Maulana Abdul Aziz and Maulana Abdur Rasheed have also launched an illegal FM Radio service with its transmissions aired on FM Channel 92-96, the statement said. The Islamabad police have arrested two students of Lal Masjid and another two of Jamia Hafsa, while the Islamabad administration is trying to resolve the matter through negotiations.

  Obscenity behind the scenes
  Internet cafes in various parts of the city of Faisalabad are allegedly screening porno movies, magnetising the youngsters to earn a fast buck, with the connivance of the police. A survey conducted by Dawn revealed that the club owners in Ghulam Muhammadabad, eight bazaars of the Clock Tower, Gulberg, Islamnagar, Batala Colony, People’s Colony, Green View, Razaabad, Guru Nanakpura, Madina Town, Muhammadpura and many other parts of the city are luring young people into paying them heavily in the garb of all-in-one business.

  CPNE-govt joint body
  The Standing Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has reiterated its determination to protect and expand press freedom in the country, while also engaging in a dialogue with the government. According to a press release, the CPNE in a meeting presided over by its president Syed Faseih Iqbal, approved the formation of a committee to represent the CPNE on the joint committee of the CPNE and the government in the ministry of information and broadcasting in Islamabad.

  CPNE resolves to protect press freedom
  Standing Committee of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (DPNE) Wednesday reiterated in a unanimous resolution its determination to protect and expand Press freedom in Pakistan while also engaging in a dialogue with the government. The meeting, presided over by CPNE President Syed Faseih Iqbal also approved the formation of three (03) member Committee comprising the CPNE President, Senior Vice President and Secretary General, with powers to co-opt three more members to represent the CPNE on the Joint Committee of the CPNE and the Government in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at Islamabad, which shall take up all matters of urgency requiring discussion and resolution so that the working relationship between the CPNE and the government in respect of all issues concerning the Media is promoted in the interest of free Press in Pakistan and the service of democratic practice.

  PHPL TV: Pemra plea withdrawn
  The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) withdrew on Wednesday its petition from the Supreme Court against the consent orders of Sindh High Court (SHC) for the grant of licence to the Pakistan Herald Publications (Pvt) Limited (PHPL) to establish a satellite television broadcast station. Advocate Abdul Rauf, the counsel for Pemra, informed a two-member bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi and Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed that the authority was withdrawing its appeal because it had become infructuous, Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood, who represented the PHPL, told Dawn. In the petition, Pemra had taken the view that under its Rule 17(v) it could not grant cross-ownership licence to the PHPL. But in the meanwhile it provided the uplinking facility to another private TV channel (Aaj). Being aggrieved, the PHPL moved a contempt of court petition before the SHC.

  Police action on lawyers: LHC records journalist's statements
  Justice Syed Zahid Hussain of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday recorded the statements of three journalists and adjourned the hearing till today (Thursday) of a suo motu action on the direction of the Supreme Court against police brutality on lawyers and journalists during a lawyers’ convention in Lahore on March 17.

  Journalists testify in torture probe
  Justice Syed Zahid Hussain on Wednesday recorded statements of three more journalists and put off the hearing till today in suo motu action on orders of the Supreme Court against the police’s torture of lawyers and journalists on March 17. Earlier, journalists Nawaz Tahir, Ulfat Bukhari and Taqweem-e-Millat Shah recorded their statements before the court and were cross-examined by law officers of the Punjab government.

  ATIF LATIF says Yahoo on Tuesday unveiled a new set of services to help online publishers advertise on mobile phones. Yahoo Mobile Publisher Services consists of four distinct tools: Yahoo Mobile Ad Network, Yahoo Mobile Content Engine, Yahoo Mobile Media Directory, and Yahoo Mobile Site Submit, designed to improve the internet for mobile phone customers and to help publishers monetise online content tailored for mobile users. Using the Yahoo Mobile Ad Network, publishers will be able to support their mobile content with syndicated ads, including display ads, video ads, in-game ads, and sponsored links.

  Film industry decline goes unnoticed
  During the military rule of General Zia-ul-Haq, cinema houses were either facing destruction or transformation into more commercially viable ventures. However, in the current era of enlightenment and moderation, too, the cinema industry is on the verge of collapse. The Pakistan Film Exhibitors’ Association (both its Southern and Northern zones) have been observing token strikes every Thursday, and, on April 12, cinema houses all over the country will observe a complete strike for a one week period.

  Pakistan to gift TV transmitter to Afghanistan
  The government of Pakistan will hand over a TV transmitter to the government of Afghanistan as a gift. In this connection a ceremony will be held at PTV Islamabad on Thursday where Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani will be the chief guest. Director Engineering (P&P) PTV Qazi Mustafa Kamal told APP that the 4.6 million rupees gift consists of a TV transmitter with allied equipment. It would help Afghan government to upgrade its television network in the country.

  Media projects discussed
  Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani Wednesday called on the NWFP Governor Lt Gen(r) Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai here at the Governor's House. They discussed the government's efforts and projects for promotion of media in the province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). Meanwhile, MNA from Bajaur Agency Shahabuddin Khan and Maulana Mohammad Sadiq also called on the governor separately.

  Dr. Mehmood ul Hassan Vice Chancellor Allam Iqbal Open University has said that media is not free anywhere even not in USA. He was addressing a workshop held in Mass Communication deprtment for MPhil students of university. He said media can play pivotal role for Muslim renaissance. Society and media are closely integrated to each other.

  US news media faces tricky transition
  Traditional US media are fighting an uphill battle against Internet news websites and citizen journalists, despite question marks over the credibility of the Web and copyright problems. "It's a cross line between Internet and TV experience. In a couple of years, we'll be seeing television from being a dedicated box to being part of a home network, connected, eliminating all the wires," said Tim Hanlon, vice president of Denuo researchers.

  Historians have said that Zaheeruddin Muhammad Babar, founder of the vast Mughal Empire in India, was a brave soldier, able administrator, poet, lover of nature and above all had a good understanding of human nature. The event was jointly organised by the Institute of Central and Western Asian Studies and the department of General History. Prof Emeritus Riaz-ul-Islam, a renowned historian and the current Director of the Institute of Central and Western Asian Studies, was the chief guest.
