Attack on Media Intimidation Ghazi interviewer gets death threats, pleads no-offence |
| |
A Pakistan Television (PTV) journalist Saturday said he was innocent following “death threats” from extremist students for interviewing former Lal Masjid head cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz Ghazi after he had surrendered, in what the students deemed an “insulting way”. Anwarul Hassan, a PTV talk-show anchorman, received the threats on Friday when madrassa students took over Lal Masjid again following a cleanup operation by the armed forces on July 10. Anwar said he was told to interview a burqa-clad Aziz, the attire he had attempted to escape in. “It was not my decision to interview him in the burqa. I am an employee and I did what I was told,” he said. “We will avenge Maulana Aziz’s humiliation at the hands of Hassan, who interviewed him in an insulting way,” the students announced on the mosque’s loudspeaker before police stormed in. “I hope sanity will prevail and I will not be harmed, because I am a professional and do not believe in insulting people,” Anwar said. He also denied that he was a Shiite Muslim, an impression the students seem to have. “I am a Sunni, please understand that,” he said.

Media Regulation Pemra issues notices to TV channels |
| |
Notices have been issued to private TV channels for transmitting bloodshed and gory scenes in violation of the code of conduct, Pemra spokesman said here on Saturday. "Certain television channels have been transmitting gory images of corpses, dismembered and mutilated bodies and bloodshed in reports on incidents of violence, including bomb blasts in the country, he said. "These images have had a nerve shattering impact upon the common man particularly the vulnerable segments of society, such as women, children, the feeble and old aged persons." He said the traumatic impact of these images have aroused unnecessary fear in society and glorified terrorism. The spokesman said, "Public members have urged Pemra to take immediate action to stop the transmission of such gory images." "In deference to the sentiments and sensitivities of the public and to ensure compliance of its code of ethics and conduct, Pemra has issued notices to the TV channels to stop transmitting gruesome scenes and images of violence and bloodshed. It has warned the channels of stringent legal action in case of repeat violation of respective Pemra provisions specified in the ordinance, code of conduct and the license terms and conditions duly signed by the satellite TV licensees of Pemra," he concluded.

Target: showbiz women |
| |
Before the murder of Karishma Shah, the same day, another stage dancer Nida Chaudhry lodged a case at the Sattukatla police station against a drama producer Arshad Chaudhry for threatening her. Last month, unidentified culprits shot a stage dancer Saima Khan at her doorstep and she was injured. After she was treated, she left for Karachi. At the time, Additional inspector general Malik Muhammad Iqbal said that the investigation showed that the assailants also belonged to the showbiz and the police would arrest them very soon. Similarly, in the 90s, a youngster shot at a film actress Marvi, while she was shooting for a film scene. She survived the attack, but was later killed in Karachi. Stage dancer Nargis and film star Meera had also previously lodged cases against threatening phone calls. Also, acid was thrown on the faces of actresses Andaleeb and Nayna.
